Manchester United's Pursuit of Aurelien Tchouameni: Hope Remains

Manchester United’s dream of prising Aurelien Tchouameni away from Real Madrid this summer is not dead yet – despite the Frenchman signing a new long-term deal at the Bernabeu.

Michael Carrick has already overseen a serious midfield rebuild. Andrey Santos has arrived from Chelsea. Youri Tielemans is on his way after United triggered the £45 million release clause in his Aston Villa contract. The engine room is being stripped out and rebuilt in Carrick’s image.

But they still want one more. The one they have wanted for years.

United’s “dream” target

Inside Old Trafford, Tchouameni has long been viewed as the ideal signing. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has repeatedly described the France international as the “dream” midfielder for United’s INEOS-led ownership, a player capable of anchoring the side for the next decade.

At 26, he is in his prime and playing like it. Tchouameni is one of the standout defensive midfielders in world football, a central pillar of a France team chasing glory at the 2026 World Cup. He already owns a LaLiga title and a Champions League medal with Real Madrid, plus the 2021 UEFA Nations League and a runners-up finish at the 2022 World Cup.

Now he is pushing for another World Cup, with Les Bleus into the semi-finals this summer. His stock has never been higher.

So when reports emerged last week from Romano and other leading journalists that Tchouameni had agreed a new Madrid contract running to 2031, it looked like the door had slammed shut on United’s pursuit.

Apparently not.

“They could still sell him”

Andy Mitten, a well-connected and long-standing reporter on all things Manchester United, has poured fresh fuel on the story. Speaking on the Talk of the Devils podcast, he revealed that sources close to Real Madrid are not ruling out a sale.

Mitten explained that after news of the contract broke, he contacted a contact in Madrid and received a telling reply: “They could still sell him.”

The message was clear. A new contract does not necessarily mean Tchouameni is untouchable.

Mitten stressed that the player has benefited from the situation, not least in terms of his standing and security at Madrid. This is a familiar pattern: a Real Madrid player’s leverage increases when Manchester United circle.

United’s admiration is not in doubt. “Utd were interested in him, as you would be, because he’s very good,” Mitten said. For now, Tchouameni is “perfectly happy in Madrid.” But Mitten added that if that changed, the midfielder “would be perfectly happy to play for Manchester United.”

Madrid’s need to “sell big”

The real opening for United may lie not in the player’s wishes, but in Madrid’s balance sheet.

Mitten detailed conversations with journalists covering the Spanish national team, currently based in the United States, who relayed a key point: Real Madrid want to buy big, so they need to sell big.

That raises a hard question inside the Bernabeu: who brings in the kind of fee that funds the next marquee move?

Fede Valverde has been told he is in line to become captain, a clear statement of his importance. Mitten even joked that if Valverde did not fancy the armband, “you can come to Old Trafford as well.” There is, as he put it, “no issue there.”

Eduardo Camavinga, by contrast, would not command the same level of fee. Tchouameni, with his age, form and contract security, sits in a different bracket entirely.

So while his new deal prompted many to assume United’s chances were over – “that’s it, Manchester United won’t be signing him” – Mitten was never convinced. He cautioned against writing off any move “until the transfer window has closed.”

Improbable, not impossible

Mitten did not dress it up. Asked directly if there is a chance United sign Tchouameni, he replied: “It looks improbable. I think it always looked improbable.”

The scenario in which it changes is simple, if brutal: Real Madrid decide they must sacrifice one of their very best players to fund their next era. In that world, “money dictates a lot of things in football.”

United, already deep into their midfield reshuffle with Santos and Tielemans, would be ready to test that resolve.

For now, Tchouameni remains a cornerstone of Madrid and a driving force for France. But if the European champions decide they truly need to “sell big,” the question will not be whether Manchester United are interested.

It will be how far they are willing to go to finally land the midfielder they have coveted for years.
