Manchester United Pursue Dream Tchouameni Transfer as Madrid Eyes Rodri
Manchester United’s summer has finally caught fire. And yet, for all the work already done, the move they really want is still sitting on the far horizon.
Andrey Santos is in. Youri Tielemans is in. The midfield department looks deeper, more flexible, more modern. But Michael Carrick knows it isn’t enough if United are serious about clawing their way back towards the Premier League’s top two and staying relevant in the Champions League beyond the group-stage niceties.
He wants a pillar. A new anchor for a midfield stripped of Casemiro’s presence and personality. In Carrick’s ideal world, that anchor wears white in Madrid and navy in Paris, and has been on United’s radar for years: Aurelien Tchouameni.
Madrid’s domino move that changes everything
Up to now, Tchouameni has been the untouchable one at the Bernabeu. Real Madrid have treated him as a central piece of their next great midfield, the natural bridge between the Kroos–Modric era and whatever comes next. Every enquiry has been politely, firmly rebuffed.
But the landscape in Spain is shifting.
Madrid now expect to land Rodri from Manchester City, the World Cup Golden Ball winner and captain of Spain’s triumphant La Roja. The pull of home after lifting the biggest prize of all is strong, and the prospect of Rodri patrolling the Bernabeu pitch is enough to make any coach rip up their midfield plans and start again.
He is, quite simply, City’s metronome. Their safety net. Their organiser and destroyer rolled into one. If he leaves, Pep Guardiola loses arguably his most important player. If he arrives, Madrid’s already crowded midfield becomes a traffic jam.
That is where United’s interest sharpens.
Rodri’s arrival would inevitably squeeze minutes somewhere. Tchouameni, still at an age where he needs to start, not wait, could suddenly find himself glancing at the team sheet a little more often than he’d like. And for the first time, there are whispers from Spain that Madrid are listening.
According to Simply Utd, Real Madrid are now “open to a sale” of Tchouameni – but only at what they consider the right price. In their world, that means a very high one. United, sensing the first crack in the door, have made fresh contact.
There is also an admiration for Eduardo Camavinga, another jewel of Madrid’s midfield, though any suggestion he is more available belongs firmly in the realm of speculation rather than concrete negotiation.
The dream signing with a nightmare price
Inside Old Trafford, nobody is pretending this is straightforward.
Reporting this week, the Manchester Evening News’ Samuel Luckhurst Railston relayed the mood from within the club. A United source in Trondheim was “adamant” that a deal for Tchouameni is “not currently realistic” because of the cost involved. The internal view is blunt: if Madrid genuinely put him up for sale, the fee would likely sit beyond what United can reasonably reach.
That doesn’t stop them dreaming.
Tchouameni is described internally as a dream signing – the kind of midfielder you build a project around, not just plug a gap with. United would “absolutely make an offer” if Madrid gave the right signals on price. The problem is nobody yet knows what that price would be, or whether Madrid are truly ready to sacrifice a player they have invested so much faith in.
For Carrick, the equation is simple. Arsenal are accelerating. Manchester City, even if they lose Rodri, remain the benchmark. United have ground to make up, and they need a dominant holding midfielder to do it. Santos and Tielemans add quality and options, but they don’t replace the authority Casemiro once brought to the centre of the pitch.
So United wait. They probe. They keep the line warm with Madrid, hoping Rodri’s move turns a fantasy into a negotiation.
The question now is not whether Tchouameni fits United’s vision. It’s whether the club are willing – or even able – to pay the kind of fee that turns a dream into a defining statement of intent.
