Manchester United have circled back to Aurélien Tchouaméni, refusing to let the Real Madrid midfielder slip off their radar as the summer window gathers pace.

They have already been rebuffed once. That has not cooled the interest. With Casemiro gone to Inter Miami and a glaring hole at the base of midfield, United have returned to Madrid asking the same question: is Tchouaméni available?

In profile terms, he ticks every box: age, pedigree, defensive instincts, and the ability to control tempo from deep.

There is a hard reality, though.

José Mourinho is counting on Tchouaméni for the 2026–2027 season, and that changes the equation. Real Madrid view him not as a dispensable asset but as a pillar for the medium term. Any attempt to prise him away will demand not only a huge financial effort but also a compelling sporting argument that can unsettle a player seemingly on the brink of committing his future to the Spanish giants.

United know this is no simple negotiation. They are chasing a player Madrid want to build around, not one they are looking to move on. Yet the need at Old Trafford is just as clear.
