Manchester United’s pre-season is starting to carry a bit of weight. This afternoon in Gothenburg, it gets a full European sheen.
Fresh from turning over Atletico Madrid, United step into the Ullevi Stadium to face Paris Saint-Germain in what feels far more like a statement rehearsal than a gentle summer run-out. Two weeks from the start of the Premier League season, the opposition is the European champions. The margin for sloppiness narrows.
Carrick’s side are building something that looks like rhythm. Another test, another stage, another chance to see how far along they really are.
Tielemans ready for first glimpse in red
The headline from a United perspective is clear: Youri Tielemans is finally ready.
The Belgian midfielder, given extra time off after Belgium’s run to the World Cup quarter-finals, is expected to make his first appearance since completing his summer move. It’s only a friendly, but debuts like this carry their own electricity. A new tempo-setter in the middle of the pitch, a new passing angle, a new voice in the dressing room.
Carrick has had to juggle absences. Kobbie Mainoo, Lisandro Martinez and Marcus Rashford are still on leave after their World Cup exertions. Up front, Benjamin Sesko remains sidelined, joined on the injury list by Manuel Ugarte, Karl Darlow and Matthijs de Ligt, while Senne Lammens and Matheus Cunha are out through illness.
Even so, the squad is starting to thicken again. Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are all back in contention. Bryan Mbeumo, who struck twice against Atletico Madrid, is expected to keep his place at the tip of the attack. His sharpness has been one of the more encouraging signs of United’s summer. Fifteen-year-old JJ Gabriel, who caught the eye with a first senior appearance last weekend, drops out of the squad, a reminder that this is no longer a gentle environment for experiments. The stakes are edging up.
PSG searching for a response
On the other side, Luis Enrique arrives with questions to answer.
PSG’s pre-season has barely started and already it has a bruise: a 3-0 defeat to Mallorca in their opening friendly. That outing was heavy on academy involvement, with Illia Zabarnyi and Lucas Beraldo playing the full match and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia making his return. The result was poor, but the real concern lies in how quickly the European champions can knit themselves together before competitive action returns.
This is only PSG’s second and final friendly before they face Aston Villa in next week’s UEFA Super Cup. There is no time to drift into form. They need sharpness now.
There is some relief for Enrique. Marquinhos, Nuno Mendes, Joao Neves and Vitinha have resumed training and could feature in Gothenburg, adding much-needed experience and structure. Achraf Hakimi remains a doubt, while Bradley Barcola, Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele are edging closer after their own World Cup breaks but are not yet fully back in the frame.
So PSG arrive a little undercooked, a little incomplete, but still dangerous. Even short of full strength, they bring quality in every line. What they lack is cohesion and minutes together.
A friendly in name, a marker in reality
Strip away the pre-season tag and this fixture has real edge.
Manchester United vs PSG. European champions on one side, a resurgent Premier League contender on the other. A meeting in Sweden, but with an audience watching for clues about how both clubs are shaping up for the season ahead.
United’s recent head-to-head record against PSG is tight: two wins for the English side, three for the French, no draws. The bookmakers lean towards Carrick’s team this time, with United priced as favourites and PSG pushed out, a reflection of the visitors’ absentees and disjointed build-up.
United’s camp will see this as an opportunity. Back-to-back pre-season wins have already nudged confidence upwards. A third, against this calibre of opponent, would do more than decorate the summer. It would harden belief.
PSG, though, cannot afford another flat performance. With only Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup between them and the season’s real business, this match in Gothenburg has to serve as a launchpad.
