Manchester United Preseason Clash with PSG: Tielemans and Fernandes Shine
Manchester United step into the serious part of preseason on Saturday, trading routine workouts for a meeting with the European champions. Paris Saint-Germain await in Gothenburg, a glamour friendly on paper, a measuring stick in reality.
This is Michael Carrick’s fourth game in charge of this summer schedule, and it is comfortably the sternest examination so far.
Tielemans joins the act, Bruno back in command
The headline for United is the first sight of Youri Tielemans in red. The Belgian midfielder finally links up with his new teammates after his post-World Cup break, bringing a different rhythm and range of passing to a midfield that already revolves around Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes, back from his own extended rest, returns to the armband and the centre of everything. With Tielemans alongside him, Carrick gets an early look at a partnership that could define United’s season. Preseason or not, managers pay attention to the first hints of chemistry.
Behind them, the squad is stretched in goal. Both first and second choice keepers are missing, so veteran Tom Heaton is set to shoulder the full 90 minutes. Young faces missing as illness bites

Senne Lammens and Matheus Cunha stayed behind due to illness, a reminder that preseason plans rarely run smoothly. JJ Gabriel, the teenager who caught the eye with his first senior appearance against Atletico Madrid last week, has also not travelled despite the buzz around him.
For a club that has been talking up its pathway from academy to first team, Gabriel’s absence is notable. This was a chance to see how he coped against elite European opposition. That audition will have to wait.
PSG not full strength, but still dangerous
Across the halfway line, Luis Enrique has his own problems. PSG are far from full strength, yet nobody at United will be fooled by the absentees.
Bradley Barcola, Desire Doué and Ousmane Dembélé are all missing, stripping some of the raw pace and chaos from the French champions’ attack. The names who are here, though, are more than enough to test any back line.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia brings his familiar menace from wide areas, the kind of one-on-one threat that turns a friendly into a real defensive examination. Nuno Mendes offers power and thrust from full-back, Vitinha stitches play together in midfield, and João Neves adds sharpness and bite.
PSG’s first outing of preseason ended in a 3-0 defeat to Mallorca, with Kvaratskhelia the only regular starting outfield player in the initial XI. That scoreline stung. Enrique’s side arrive in Sweden with something to correct, even if the stakes are low and the trophy cabinets already full.
A friendly in name, a benchmark in reality
For United, this is about more than fitness.
It is a chance to see Tielemans and Fernandes share responsibility against a top-class midfield. A chance to watch how a makeshift goalkeeping situation holds up when Kvaratskhelia and company start asking serious questions. A chance for Carrick to gauge how far his ideas have travelled in just a few short weeks.
Preseason often drifts. This one should not. When you face the European champions, even in July, the performance tends to linger in the memory far longer than the date on the fixture list.
