Manchester United Divided Over €60m Move for Manu Kone
Manchester United’s summer rebuild has hit its first major fault line – and it sits right in the middle of Michael Carrick’s midfield.
The club’s hierarchy are divided over a move for AS Roma’s Manu Kone, with the Frenchman emerging as a serious option but not a universally accepted one inside Old Trafford’s recruitment department.
Midfield rebuild, but no consensus
United have already moved decisively in the market, bringing in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to reshape the centre of the pitch. Carrick, though, wants a third midfielder in before the new Premier League season kicks off, a final piece to give him depth and variety in the middle.
The shortlist is ambitious and varied. Bournemouth pair Alex Scott and Tyler Adams are both under consideration, offering Premier League experience and very different profiles. Higher up the food chain, Aurelien Tchouameni is being monitored, with United ready to explore a deal if Real Madrid soften their stance and show any willingness to cash in on the France international.
Amid those names, Kone has moved to the forefront of the discussion – and sparked the internal debate.
Kone deal stalls over fee and internal doubts
Reports in Italy this week claimed United have already agreed personal terms with Kone, who was part of France’s World Cup squad that fell to Spain in the semi-finals earlier this month. On the player’s side, the path appears clear.
The problem lies elsewhere.
Roma are said to be demanding a €60 million (£51m) package for the 25-year-old, a price that has given United pause. According to The Telegraph, not everyone inside the club’s recruitment structure is convinced Kone represents the right deal at that figure, with the move lacking “universal backing” among the decision-makers.
In other words, this is not a straightforward green light. It is a debate.
Some at Old Trafford see the fee, the profile, and the current squad options and are reluctant to commit. Others, clearly, have pushed hard enough for personal terms to be discussed. Until that split is resolved, Roma’s asking price will sit on the table, untouched.
Baleba also under scrutiny
Kone is not the only midfielder prompting hesitation.
The Telegraph also reports that there are reservations at United over a renewed move for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba. United tried to sign the 22-year-old last summer, but Brighton responded with a £100m valuation, effectively shutting down talks.
Baleba then endured an inconsistent season under Fabian Hurzeler, and that mixed campaign has cooled some of the enthusiasm that once surrounded him. The talent remains, but at Old Trafford, the appetite to gamble big on potential appears to be waning.
United’s midfield search, once seemingly broad and aggressive, now looks more like a series of careful calculations.
Carrick calm as pre-season gathers pace
While the recruitment debate rumbles on in the background, Carrick’s team are quietly building on the pitch.
On Friday, United cruised to a 5-0 win over Rosenborg in Norway, another sharp pre-season outing that allowed the manager to fine-tune his ideas and reintegrate players returning from World Cup duty.
“I think we’re in a good place. I think there’s four weeks to go to the start and we’re gradually getting some boys back from the World Cup as we progress,” Carrick said after the win.
He stressed the need for “a little bit of patience and time” and spoke of keeping players fit while “moving forward” as the key to United’s preparation. “As it stands right now, I think we’re in a pretty good place. So, the boys will get better as we go,” he added.
The performance in Norway suggested a squad buying into his ideas. The question now is what kind of midfield he will have at his disposal when the real games begin.
United want one more central figure. Roma want €60m. The recruitment team are split.
Something has to give before the season starts.
