Manchester United Make Last-Minute Move for Barcelona's Alejandro Balde
As the summer transfer window nears its close, Manchester United are stepping up efforts to bring Barcelona's left-back Alejandro Balde to Old Trafford. With a squad already bolstered by recent signings, Michael Carrick is keen to address defensive needs before the deadline.
Late Defensive Reinforcement on the Cards
Despite investing around £150m in midfield this summer and adding players like Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Carlos Baleba, United still see the left-back spot as an area to improve. Newcastle's Lewis Hall was initially targeted, but the Magpies have refused to sell their England international, forcing United to explore other options.
Ongoing Negotiations with Barcelona and Jorge Mendes
Interest in Balde isn't new for the Red Devils, who had talks with his agent Jorge Mendes in late August. Although Balde was expected to stay at Barcelona under Hansi Flick, his role there has diminished. He has not played competitively this season despite being in the squad against Rayo Vallecano. The rise of 19-year-old Xabi Espart and the signing of Joao Cancelo on a free transfer have limited his chances.

The key sticking point is the nature of the deal. Manchester United prefer a loan to cover this season's needs, but Barcelona want a permanent sale to help their finances. The La Liga club values Balde at around £34 million and are firm on a permanent transfer.
Other Targets and Market Moves
United have considered other players like Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas, who has a £13m release clause, but the club has decided not to pursue him currently. Racing have moved quickly to replace Salinas by signing Aaron Martin from Genoa. Meanwhile, United remain focused on securing Balde.
