Manchester United Explore Signing Brazil Striker Igor Thiago
Manchester United have made an exploratory move for Brazil international Igor Thiago as they quietly map out their next step in the centre-forward department.
The club’s recruitment drive remains centred on rebuilding the spine of Erik ten Hag’s side, with a third new midfielder still viewed as the key piece of business. A left-back is next on the list, with Newcastle’s Lewis Hall identified as the leading target. Only once those areas are addressed are United expected to fully turn towards the attacking positions.
Even so, the groundwork up front has already begun.
United place call over Igor Thiago
Transfer insider Ben Jacobs has confirmed that Thiago, fresh from a prolific Premier League campaign with Brentford, has been discussed internally at Old Trafford. United have gone further than simple scouting reports too.
“Igor Thiago has been discussed, somebody that’s Premier League ready,” Jacobs told The United Stand, revealing that United have made what he described as a “normal player call” to the striker’s camp to gauge his situation.
For now, it is no more than that: due diligence, not a full-scale push. The message from those close to the talks is clear – prising Thiago away this summer would be “incredibly difficult”.
There is a reason United are interested, though. The 25-year-old delivered a standout season last term, scoring 22 goals in the Premier League and 25 in all competitions for Brentford. That form propelled him into the Brazil national team in 2026 and onto the World Cup stage, where, despite earning multiple opportunities, he struggled to replicate his club dominance.
Even so, a Premier League-proven No 9 in his mid‑twenties, with international pedigree, naturally sits on the radar of a club searching for more firepower.
Striker plans hinge on Zirkzee
United’s broader attacking strategy remains fluid. A new left winger is being considered, but only if a suitable exit can be found for Marcus Rashford. The same conditional thinking applies through the middle.
The club are open to adding an experienced or proven striker, yet that move is likely to depend on what happens with Joshua Zirkzee. If the Dutchman leaves, United will need a replacement. If he stays, the urgency to recruit another centre-forward may ease.
That context explains why several names have been floated. United briefly toyed with the idea of bringing academy product Danny Welbeck back before he chose Chelsea. Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins have both been linked as well, emblematic of the club’s interest in forwards who know the division and can shoulder immediate responsibility.
Thiago now joins that bracket of options: admired, assessed, but far from guaranteed.
For the moment, the message from Old Trafford is that midfield and left-back remain the live fires to put out. The striker situation sits behind them, simmering, waiting for the first big domino – likely Zirkzee’s future – to fall.
When it does, United must decide whether to push for a difficult deal for Thiago, pivot to another Premier League marksman, or trust what they already have.
