Radek Vítek is closing in on a permanent switch to Middlesbrough in a deal that could rise to £14 million, while fellow goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is set to join Celta Vigo on loan for the season.
It marks another sharp turn in United’s evolving strategy between the posts.
Vítek cashes in on Bristol City breakthrough
Vítek’s move is the headline act. The 22-year-old Czech keeper has gone from quiet prospect to serious asset in a single standout campaign at Bristol City, and Middlesbrough are ready to pay for that rise.
Last season’s defeated Championship play-off finalists are pushing to add a long-term number one, and Vítek fits the profile: young, battle-tested in the division, and still with clear room to grow.
He joined United from Sigma Olomouc in 2020 and took the traditional goalkeeper’s route: a series of unglamorous but vital loans. Spells at Accrington and Blau-Weiss Linz hardened his game, but it was at Ashton Gate where he truly flourished, convincing clubs higher up the food chain that he was ready for a bigger stage.
United are not walking away lightly. The deal with Boro is structured with matching rights and a buy-back clause, underlining how highly they still rate his potential. The package is worth up to £14m including bonuses, and United have also secured up to a 35 per cent sell-on clause, protecting themselves if Vítek’s value explodes in the coming years.
For Middlesbrough, it’s a statement signing in a key position. For United, it’s a calculated gamble: cash now, control later.
Carrick’s new guard in goal
Michael Carrick is quietly building his own version of Middlesbrough, and the goalkeeping overhaul is a clear part of that.
Senne Lammens remains the established number one, but he is no longer alone. Karl Darlow has arrived on a free transfer, bringing Premier League and Championship experience and adding steel to the depth chart.
Darlow’s signing followed Andre Onana’s loan return to Trabzonspor, another sign of movement and churn in United’s wider goalkeeping group. With Vítek heading out permanently and Bayindir set to go on loan, the picture is being redrawn at pace.
Bayindir seeks a fresh start in Spain
While Vítek leaves for good, Bayindir’s story is different. His next step is about opportunity rather than closure.
The Turkey international is on the verge of a season-long loan to Celta Vigo. Since joining United from Fenerbahce in 2023, the 28-year-old has largely lived in the shadows as a back-up, his chances limited, his rhythm disrupted.
Celta are ready to offer what he has lacked: a genuine shot at regular football in LaLiga.
The loan is not a simple salary dump. Celta will cover his wages and the agreement includes performance-related bonuses, reflecting the expectation that he will play and influence games. Crucially, the Spanish club also hold an option to buy, reportedly set at £3.5m, and a sell-on clause would kick in if they make the move permanent and sell him on later.
United, again, are hedging. They open a door for Bayindir to rebuild his career, while keeping a financial upside if he thrives in Spain.
A new hierarchy, and a clear message
Piece by piece, United’s goalkeeping puzzle is changing shape. Lammens and Darlow form the new spine. Onana is out on loan. Vítek is set to become a lucrative sale with strings attached. Bayindir is heading to LaLiga with a chance to reset his trajectory.
The message is unmistakable: this is no longer a bloated stable of keepers waiting for minutes. It is a streamlined group, backed by clauses and options that keep United financially and strategically involved.
For Vítek and Bayindir, the next season will define whether they were surplus to requirements at Old Trafford—or simply goalkeepers who needed the right stage to prove exactly how good they can be.
