Manchester United Forward's Future in Limbo After Barcelona Loan
The forward’s future at Old Trafford has swung back into focus after a loan spell at Barcelona that delivered a Liga title but no long-term commitment.
He did his part in Catalonia, contributing to a championship run in a demanding environment, yet when it came time to buy, Barça looked elsewhere. The Spanish champions turned to Anthony Gordon, striking a deal with Newcastle United and closing the door on a permanent move for the Manchester United striker.
For the player, that decision has left him in limbo. For United, it has left an expensive problem on the books.
A £40 million release clause, ring-fenced for Premier League clubs, has now lapsed without a single formal bid. No English side tested United’s resolve, no late scramble, no deadline drama. The clause simply expired, and with it went the simplest escape route for all parties.
United’s stance, though, has not changed. Senior figures at the club remain determined to move him on, driven largely by the weight of his contract. At £325,000 a week, his wages sit among the highest at the club, a strain on a squad still being reshaped and a wage bill that needs trimming.
Yet while the board looks for a buyer, life around the training ground has shifted.
The departure of Ruben Amorim, whose tenure saw the forward frozen out of the first-team picture, has eased tensions. Under Amorim, he slipped to the margins, a high-earning asset with little influence on the pitch. That chapter has closed.
Michael Carrick’s arrival in the dugout has changed the mood. The new manager has offered something the striker has not enjoyed for some time at United: a clean slate. Sessions at Carrington now carry a different tone, with the forward back in the fold and a chance, at least for now, to prove he can still be part of the club’s plans.
United still listen to offers. The player still carries a salary that makes negotiations awkward. But for the first time in a while, his future at Old Trafford may not be decided solely in the boardroom. It might be settled on the pitch.
