Barcelona lodged an opening bid with Manchester City on Friday for the World Cup‑winning midfielder, a move that could reshape the market for elite holding players. Madrid had already started working on a deal for Rodri, but Barca’s intervention has complicated that pursuit and, by extension, Tchouameni’s situation.

Rodri has a new contract proposal on the table at City, yet he has never hidden the appeal of returning to Spain. Current indications are that he prefers a switch to Camp Nou rather than joining Jose Mourinho’s project, and Manchester Evening News understands City will not block his exit if they receive a fee that reflects his stature.

Barca’s first offer did not come close. Their proposal – reported by The Athletic as €45m (£38m) plus add‑ons – falls well short of City’s valuation. The Premier League champions are holding out for a figure in excess of £60m, a price that underlines just how central Rodri has been to their dominance.

If Barcelona find the money and force City’s hand, Madrid’s need to protect their own midfield core only hardens. And that is where United’s problem begins.

Tchouameni locked in – at least for now

United’s interest in Tchouameni has been genuine and long‑standing. At 26, the France international fits the profile of a long‑term anchor in midfield, and club officials made sure they understood both his character and his situation at Madrid before considering any move.
