Manchester United Boosted by Alejandro Balde's Decision to Leave Barcelona
Manchester United’s search for a new left-back has taken a sharp twist – and a very promising one. Alejandro Balde, one of Barcelona’s brightest academy products, has decided to leave the Catalan club, according to Jijantes, throwing the door wide open for a potential move to Old Trafford.
His agent, Jorge Mendes, is now working to secure him a new club before the summer window shuts. The timing could hardly be better for United.
Balde was a key figure in Barcelona’s success last season. The 22-year-old featured 42 times in all competitions, playing a major role as Barça lifted both La Liga and the Supercopa de Espana. He offered width, energy and relentless running down the flank, quickly becoming one of the side’s most dynamic outlets.
Now, though, the picture has changed. Hansi Flick does not see Balde as part of his long-term plans, and his first-team minutes are expected to shrink dramatically this season. For a player already established at the top level, that is a brutal comedown – and a clear trigger for his decision to move on.
For United, it could be an opportunity they cannot afford to miss.
Erik ten Hag’s side are actively hunting a new left-back. Tyrell Malacia has departed on a free transfer, while Patrick Dorgu is viewed more as an option on the left wing than a specialist defender. That leaves Luke Shaw as the only established senior left-back, and his workload – and injury history – makes the need for reinforcement obvious.
United had identified Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall as an ideal candidate. Young, technically gifted and comfortable in possession, Hall fit the profile perfectly. But that trail has cooled. The 21-year-old is expected to remain at St James’ Park and has entered talks over a new contract, with Newcastle offering him a place within the leadership group under manager Matthias Jaissle.
With Hall likely off the table, attention naturally swings to Balde.
At just 22, the Spain international already boasts 168 senior appearances for Barcelona. That level of experience, at that age, in that environment, is rare. He is known for his blistering pace, sharp dribbling and powerful ball-carrying from deep – traits that would instantly change the dynamic of United’s left side.
This is not a raw prospect needing years of patience. This is a ready-made, high-tempo full-back who has already lived the pressure of a title race and come out with medals.
If United want to ease the burden on Shaw, inject speed into their build-up and modernise the role of their left-back, Balde fits the brief. The question now is simple: with the player willing to move and the window ticking down, will they move quickly enough to bring him to Old Trafford?
