Chelsea's New Defensive Weapon: Palestra's Italian Education
On the eve of Chelsea’s Premier League opener at Fulham on Monday night, Alonso made it clear why the club is so excited about their new defensive option.
The Spanish coach pointed straight at the player’s Italian schooling as the key difference.
He stressed how Palestra’s tactical education sets him apart from the typical English defender, saying the youngster’s background has shaped him into a rare, two-sided option at the back. In Italy, Alonso explained, defenders are raised to feel at home on either side of the pitch, and Palestra is a product of that mindset.
"I would say it's probably unusual in England because, in Italy for example, it's quite common, and he has had this education in Italian football to play both profiles. It doesn't matter if you are right-footed or left-footed, just that you are versatile. So he has this option, this energy. He's something different, maybe not that common here, but in Italy it's quite common," Alonso said.
That versatility is exactly what Chelsea believe can give them an extra dimension this season. A defender comfortable on both flanks, with the legs and the intelligence to adapt, offers tactical flexibility that Premier League coaches crave.
The impact has not just been on the grass at Cobham.
Behind the scenes, Alonso painted the picture of a player who has wasted no time settling into the squad dynamic and winning over his new teammates.
"He's had a great impact as well in the changing room. He's integrated really well. He's a great guy and with this freshness that he has brought, apart from his football qualities, he's a very great addition to the club," the manager added.
Chelsea head to Craven Cottage with a new defensive weapon, shaped in Italy, unleashed in England.
