Julian Alvarez Transfer Update: Arteta Intensifies Arsenal Pursuit
Julian Alvarez’s name has sat at the top of Arsenal’s attacking wishlist all summer. Now the chase has moved from background noise to something far more direct.
Sources in Spain report that Mikel Arteta has personally spoken with the Atletico Madrid forward about a move to the Emirates Stadium. The Arsenal manager is understood to have made contact as the Gunners explore whether they can prise the Argentine out of the Spanish capital before the window closes.
From Madrid, the mood music has changed. Alvarez is said to be open to the idea of joining Arsenal, even with his long‑admired Barcelona also circling. Atletico, though, have pushed back against dealing with the Catalan club, wary of strengthening a direct rival. That resistance has kept the north London option alive, even if the Camp Nou remains described as Alvarez’s dream destination.
Tension around the player has been building. Alvarez was left out of Atletico’s La Liga opener against Malaga, with Diego Simeone explaining that the forward was not in the right frame of mind to play. When he did feature in the new campaign, sections of the Atletico support turned on him, whistling their own player amid growing uncertainty over his future.
“We always aim to secure the best possible tools, just as we’ve always had,” he said. “And, well, let’s hope we can assemble the best possible squad between now and the deadline.”
No guarantees. No promises that Alvarez stays.
For Arsenal, the interest in Alvarez comes on top of a summer of heavy investment and calculated risk.
Arteta has already reshaped key areas of his squad. Ezri Konsa became the latest arrival after completing a £51million switch from Aston Villa, adding another proven Premier League defender to a back line that has been stretched.
The headline signing, though, is Bruno Guimaraes. Arsenal paid £75million to prise the captain away from Newcastle United, a statement move in the heart of midfield. He follows Piero Hincapie and Christos Tzolis into the building, with Hincapie’s loan from Bayer Leverkusen turned into a permanent deal after an impressive spell last season.
Arteta made no secret before the opening game of Arsenal’s title defence that he still wanted more. Speaking about Konsa’s arrival, he laid bare the numbers and the concern.
“We needed one more player, we had seven players in the defensive line, we know that that's not enough,” he said. “We have two long-term injuries, one with Jurrien (Timber), and one with Willy (Saliba).
“And we wanted someone that didn't have the qualities that we already have, so somebody ideally with experience, because as a centre-back in this league you cannot play jokes, we know how important that position is, and I think Ezri brings a lot of qualities that we needed.”
On the pitch, his side have started like champions. Arsenal brushed aside Coventry City 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium in their first Premier League game of the new campaign, with Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard all on the scoresheet in a comfortable win.
The squad looks stronger. The title defence has begun with authority. Now the question is whether Arsenal add a high-profile forward to that mix.
If Arteta can turn conversations with Alvarez into a concrete deal, the champions’ attack could take on a very different edge before the window slams shut.
