Manchester United Abandons €45m Éderson Transfer Deal Over Medical Issues
What looked like Manchester United’s first big midfield signing of the summer has collapsed at the final turn, with the club walking away from a deal for Atalanta’s Éderson over medical concerns.
The Brazilian, fresh from World Cup duty and long tipped for a move to Old Trafford, had been on the brink of joining in a €45m package. Paperwork between the clubs was completed, personal terms agreed since May, and transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano had even branded it “100 per cent confirmed” at the start of June.
United, riding the momentum of a resurgent second half of the season under Michael Carrick that ended with a third-place finish and Champions League qualification, had earmarked Éderson as a key piece of their midfield rebuild. Extra Champions League revenue and the restored pull of Europe’s elite competition had given the club confidence they could move decisively in the market.
For weeks, all signs pointed one way. Romano detailed on X that United and Atalanta had “completed all documents” for the €45m deal, with the player due to sign later in the summer. Inside Old Trafford, Éderson was being spoken of as the first arrival of a window designed to push the club closer to the top of the Premier League.
Then the tone changed.
Romano has now revealed that United have pulled out, informing Atalanta that the transfer is off after concerns emerged around the midfielder’s fitness. The Italian club, for their part, are adamant there is no issue.
“Éderson to Manchester United, deal OFF and considered as collapsed as Man Utd informed Atalanta,” Romano wrote on X. “Atalanta believe Éderson is 100% fit and will welcome the midfielder back as part of their squad, as Man United changed their plans. Éderson won’t join #MUFC.”
So the player who had been speaking about his future in Qatar now returns to Bergamo instead of Manchester. During the World Cup, Éderson cut a relaxed figure when asked about the move, stressing that the timing of any announcement could wait.
“I have to wait. Now I have to enjoy this moment, then we will see,” he told reporters. “Certainly, everything is almost done, but now I have to enjoy this moment. This is a wonderful experience and you have to enjoy the most.”
From “almost done” to dead in the water. The swing is brutal, and it leaves United back at the start line in their hunt for midfield steel.
The collapse will sting even more given how the fee had been framed. Former Tottenham midfielder Sandro, speaking last month, believed United were on the verge of landing serious value in a market where top midfielders command extraordinary sums.
“I think Éderson as well, £38 million I believe,” he told BritishGambler.co.uk, highlighting how that figure compared to other names linked with United. “When you think, Man Utd are linked with Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, Tchouameni from Real Madrid, they’re all obviously world-class players, but they are so expensive comparatively.
“I think £38 million for Éderson is a bit of a bargain, really, in today’s market, right?”
Sandro praised Éderson’s profile, pointing to the blend of physicality and quality that had attracted Premier League interest beyond Old Trafford.
“I know that he’s a top midfielder. He went to Brazil a few times with the national team. I saw a couple of videos, whilst I didn’t follow him game by game, I know that he’s strong. He has that physical ability to play in the Premier League and I know that a few other clubs wanted to sign him from the Premier League as well.”
Atalanta now regain a player they had already mentally prepared to lose, convinced he is fully fit and ready to resume his role in Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad. United, who had hoped to present Éderson as the first building block of a Champions League-ready midfield, must pivot quickly.
The question now is not what Éderson would have brought to Carrick’s side, but who steps into the gap his aborted arrival has left at the heart of United’s summer plans.
