Manchester City are on the brink of landing one of Europe’s most coveted young midfielders, with Ayyoub Bouaddi having agreed personal terms ahead of a move to the Etihad Stadium.
At 18, Bouaddi has gone from promising prospect to priority target in a year. City have moved aggressively, and with the Premier League season less than two weeks away, the timing is no accident.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reported that Bouaddi and his camp have reached an agreement on personal terms with City, with talks between the English champions and Lille already at an advanced stage. Crucially, Bouaddi wants the move now, not in 2027, pushing all parties towards a swift resolution.
That urgency reflects his trajectory.
Last season, the teenager forced his way into Lille’s starting XI and stayed there. Across Ligue 1 and the Europa League, he racked up 35 starts and five substitute appearances in the 2025-26 campaign, an extraordinary workload for a player his age in one of Europe’s top leagues.
He didn’t just survive. He dictated.
Bouaddi has built his reputation as a deep-lying midfielder who can control tempo, break lines with his passing and stand up physically against seasoned opponents. Those qualities have already drawn comparisons with some of the elite holding players in the modern game, and City, more than most, know the value of a midfielder who can anchor a side built on dominance of the ball.
His rise has not been confined to club football. On the international stage, Bouaddi has already started five matches for Morocco at the World Cup, a remarkable feat for an 18-year-old. Those performances have hardened the sense that this is not just potential, but a player ready to handle the demands of the very highest level.
City are prepared to pay accordingly.
The deal, once completed, is expected to push their summer outlay towards the £200 million mark. That figure already includes the headline £116 million move for Elliott Anderson from Nottingham Forest, a transfer that underlined City’s willingness to invest heavily in reshaping Enzo Maresca’s squad.
Bouaddi is central to that reshaping.
The pursuit comes at a moment of major transition in City’s midfield. Rodri’s departure to Barcelona, expected to be officially confirmed later this week, leaves a gaping hole at the heart of Maresca’s structure. Few players in world football have been as important to their team’s control and balance as the Spaniard in recent seasons.
Replacing him is the defining challenge of Maresca’s early tenure. City believe Bouaddi can grow into that responsibility.
Negotiations with Lille have intensified over the past week. The French club initially pointed to a price in the region of €100 million (£86m) for their prize asset, a stance that reflected both his contract situation and his importance to their plans. City, though, have worked to chip away at that figure.
Reports now indicate that a package between €70 million and €80 million could be enough to strike a deal, with discussions focusing on the structure of payments and performance-related add-ons. That final layer of detail is all that stands between City and their next cornerstone midfielder.
The player’s stance has helped drive the process. Bouaddi’s preference is clear: he wants to join City immediately. With personal terms already settled and all sides optimistic, the expectation is that the transfer could be wrapped up in the coming days.
If City get it over the line, Maresca will walk into the new season with a very different midfield – and an 18-year-old at its core who has no intention of waiting his turn.
