Manchester City Pursue Elliot Anderson in £100m Transfer

Manchester City have taken a first punch in their pursuit of Elliot Anderson – and barely flinched.

Nottingham Forest have already knocked back an opening offer for the 23-year-old midfielder, holding out for a fee in the region of £100 million. City, though, are pressing on, determined to get their man quickly rather than be dragged into a summer-long saga.

City push the pace

An initial bid went in earlier this week and was promptly rejected at the City Ground. Forest believe Anderson, now an established England international, sits in the £100m bracket. City value the deal closer to £80m. Between those two numbers lies a sizeable gap, but not one that has scared off the Premier League champions.

Inside the Etihad, the message is clear: Anderson is the priority. Club figures are already moving at speed to try to close an agreement, while keeping one eye on the market and tracking alternatives such as Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali in case Forest refuse to budge.

The urgency is deliberate. Pre-season under incoming manager Enzo Maresca starts in July, and City want their new midfield centrepiece in the building by then, not scrambling through the door on deadline day.

Tuchel opens the door

The pursuit has already cut across international lines. England manager Thomas Tuchel has allowed Anderson to undergo a Manchester City medical during the FIFA World Cup in North America, a rare concession at such a crucial time in the international calendar.

That decision underlines how far along this chase has moved. So does the player’s stance. The former Newcastle United midfielder has indicated a preference to join City despite interest from Manchester United, giving the champions a crucial edge as negotiations intensify.

When a player wants the move, deals like this usually find a way.

Forest dig in

Forest, though, are not playing the role of compliant seller. Owner Evangelos Marinakis is believed to be handling talks personally from the City Ground, a sign of just how important this transfer could be to the Midlands club.

Reports have suggested Forest’s internal starting point went as high as £125m before settling publicly on a £100m valuation. City’s opening offer landed well short of that, closer to the £80m mark, and now both clubs must navigate the space between those figures in the coming days.

The next round of negotiations will decide whether this is a straight sprint to the finish or the start of a drawn-out stand-off.

Filling the Bernardo void

Inside City’s recruitment department, the view on Anderson has been consistent. Director of football Hugo Viana and Maresca both identified him over the past year as the ideal profile to replace Bernardo Silva, whose departure has left a sizeable creative and tactical hole in midfield.

Anderson’s box-to-box energy, ability to operate between the lines and willingness to press make him a natural fit for the structure Maresca wants to build. That explains the insistence. This is not a luxury signing; it is a cornerstone of the next iteration of City’s midfield.

Tonali has been scouted and remains a live option if Forest’s demands prove impossible to meet. For now, though, he is firmly Plan B. City do not want to move on. They want Anderson, and they want him now.

The clock to pre-season is ticking. The question is whether Forest blink before it hits zero.
