Manchester City Pursue Enzo Fernández as Rodri Nears Barcelona Move
Manchester City are preparing for life after Rodri. That alone would have sounded unthinkable not long ago, but the European champions are bracing for a seismic change at the heart of their midfield – and their answer may come from Chelsea.
Enzo Fernández has emerged as City’s prime target to replace Rodri, with new manager Enzo Maresca pushing hard for a reunion with the Argentina international he coached at Stamford Bridge. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, City know the price: more than £100 million to prise Fernández away from Chelsea.
It’s a bold move, but they may have little choice. ESPN sources say Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner and Spain’s World Cup-winning captain, has chosen Barcelona over Real Madrid as he enters the final year of his deal at the Etihad. Barça have been given the green light to start talks with City and now lead the race, even if Madrid have not been completely ruled out.
If Rodri really walks, City lose their metronome. Fernández, still only 25, would be asked to step straight into the most demanding role in European football. That is the scale of the gamble.
Chelsea, meanwhile, find themselves right in the middle of the market’s most expensive domino chain. While they fend off City’s interest in Fernández, they are also being linked with a surprise move for Arsenal midfielder Martín Zubimendi, as reported by Mundo Deportivo. New Blues boss Xabi Alonso is said to be an admirer of the World Cup winner, but Arsenal are in no mood to sell, even after landing £75 million signing Bruno Guimarães.
North London, though, has its own reshuffle brewing in attack.
In Ukraine, a 20-year-old forward has forced his way onto the radar of two of England’s biggest clubs. Arsenal and Manchester United scouts have been tracking Shakhtar Donetsk striker Kaua Elias, according to The Sun, and his timing could not be better.
Elias hit a hat trick in a 5-1 win over Kudrivka on Monday, underlining why Shakhtar view him as one of their top prospects. He could be available for around €35 million, a figure that suddenly looks reasonable in a market where teenage wingers are going for three times that.
Arsenal’s interest is sharpened by the situation of Gabriel Jesus. Napoli are keen on the Brazil forward, Globo report, with a €20 million valuation set as he moves into the final year of his contract at the Emirates. If Jesus goes, the Gunners will need a different profile in the final third. Elias, raw but explosive, fits that brief.
United’s presence in the stands tells its own story. They cannot afford to miss the next big attacking talent again.
Turkey dreams big: Salah, Núñez and Leão in the spotlight
While England’s elite haggle over midfielders and starlets, Turkey’s heavyweights are thinking big and thinking fast.
Trabzonspor, fresh from landing Mohamed Salah, are exploring the possibility of reuniting him with former Liverpool teammate Darwin Núñez, according to iNews. Núñez, 27, has been frozen out at Al Hilal since Karim Benzema’s arrival in February 2026 and looks set for a summer exit. Trabzonspor sense an opportunity, but they are not alone: Tottenham are also interested in a €20 million move for the Uruguay international.
This is the new reality. Turkish clubs no longer want to be a retirement home. They want prime-age forwards who can light up European nights.
Across the Bosphorus, Galatasaray are pushing just as hard. Sacha Tavolieri reports that Gala have tabled an opening offer to AC Milan for Rafael Leão, with talks over a €60 million deal ongoing for the 27-year-old winger. Leão has made it clear he wants a new challenge after seven years in Milan and 64 Serie A goals. Galatasaray, already one of the most intimidating atmospheres in Europe, now want a marquee wide forward to match their ambition.
They are not stopping there. Gianluca Di Marzio adds that Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli, 25, is also on Galatasaray’s shortlist. One of Europe’s most fervent football cities is aiming to become a destination, not a detour.
Big money moves already done
The window’s headline deals are not all hypothetical.
Real Madrid have already struck one of the most eye-catching transfers of the summer, signing teenage winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig. A source told ESPN the fee stands at €125 million, with €10 million in easily achievable bonuses and a further €5 million tied to more demanding targets. Madrid, never shy when they believe in a talent, have doubled down on their policy of paying today for tomorrow’s superstar.
In England, Leeds United have gone big on their future No. 1, signing goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City in a deal that could reach £45 million. It’s a staggering outlay for a keeper still forging his reputation, but Leeds clearly see him as a long-term cornerstone.
In Italy, FC Como have secured Yan Couto on loan from Borussia Dortmund for the 2026-27 season, a smart addition for a club intent on stabilising in the top flight.
Rodri’s next step, Barca’s next pillar
Back at the top of the market, Rodri’s potential departure remains the story that could redefine the summer.
Barcelona, short on dominant figures in recent years, now see a chance to build their midfield around a World Cup-winning captain at the peak of his powers. The deal would make Lozano a Designated Player for the rest of 2026, with an option to make the switch permanent next season. The rest of Europe does not sleep
The transfer drumbeat continues elsewhere, with a string of moves and manoeuvres shaping the middle tier of the market.
Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund are leading the chase for 18-year-old Senegal winger Ibrahim Mbaye from PSG, say L’Equipe. Anfield and the Yellow Wall rarely compete for the same teenager without good reason.
Tottenham, busy as ever, have reached a verbal agreement with defender Micky van de Ven over a new contract, according to Fabrizio Romano, as they look to lock down one of their key assets. At the same time, Atletico Madrid have opened talks with Spurs over a move for Cristian Romero, Romano adds, testing just how far Tottenham are willing to go in reshaping their back line.
On the left flank, Chelsea have agreed a deal with Rayo Vallecano for Pep Chavarria, with the 28-year-old left back set for a medical before signing, also per Romano. City, for their part, are close to replacing Trafford, having reached a verbal agreement with Marseille for goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, report Footmercato.
Hull City are pushing into the French market, showing interest in Lorient defender Nathaniel Adjei and requesting the terms of a potential deal, according to Sacha Tavolieri. Barcelona, meanwhile, are bracing for change of a different kind: Roony Bardghji wants to leave in search of more playing time, with AS reporting that Barça are open to a sale that includes a return clause.
