Liverpool's Winger Search: Barcola vs. Savinho

Liverpool’s search for a new winger is turning into a slow-burn saga with a sharp deadline looming elsewhere.

The club’s recruitment team, led by Richard Hughes, continue to weigh up options in the wake of Mohamed Salah’s departure, and the names on the table could not be more different in profile, price and timing.

Barcola: Big talent, bigger price

Bradley Barcola sits near the top of Liverpool’s scouting notes. The Paris Saint-Germain forward is highly rated across Europe and valued at around £145m — a figure that would test even the most ambitious sporting director.

Barcola is a gifted attacker, right-footed and often at his best cutting in from the left. He can operate on either flank, which adds obvious appeal. But he is not Salah. Not stylistically, not in terms of how he shapes a right side.

That matters at Anfield.

Salah, who left at the end of June after agreeing to terminate his £400k-a-week contract a year early, offered a very specific profile: a left-footed, right-sided forward who bent entire game plans around his presence. Andoni Iraola does not currently have that in his squad.

So the question is simple: do Liverpool spend huge money on a player who doesn’t mirror that role, or look elsewhere for someone who does?

Savinho: A closer Salah echo

That “elsewhere” could be Savinho.

The 22-year-old Brazilian, on Manchester City’s books and formerly of Girona, has made his intentions clear. He wants out this summer. He wants minutes, responsibility, a proper stage.

Fabrizio Romano reported that Savinho has formally informed City of his desire to leave, stressing the winger’s wish to “play more and develop in his career.” The decision now rests with Manchester City, who hold the contract and the cards.

Unlike Barcola, Savinho more closely resembles the Salah template. A wide forward comfortable operating from the right, he offers that elusive left-footed, right-wing threat Liverpool have lacked since their former talisman walked away.

At £60m, as reported by TEAMtalk, he would also cost less than half of Barcola’s price. He is tied down until 2031, which only underlines how significant any decision on his future will be.

Spurs push, Liverpool wait

There is a complication. Tottenham.

Romano has stated that Spurs have Savinho “on top of their list” and have been tracking him since May. TEAMtalk add that Roberto De Zerbi’s side have effectively set a clock ticking, giving Manchester City until the weekend to wrap up a deal. If nothing moves by then, Spurs are prepared to walk away and explore other options, with Cody Gakpo among the names of interest.

That ultimatum could change the entire market.

If Tottenham secure Savinho quickly, Liverpool lose a potential Salah successor. If talks stall or collapse, the door swings open for Hughes to step through.

For Liverpool supporters, Savinho might initially feel like a curveball. He has not been a headline act under Pep Guardiola, and his career so far has been shaped more by potential than by Premier League dominance. But there is a player there — dynamic, direct, and hungry — waiting for the right manager and the right system.

Liverpool have a choice to make: push the limits of their budget for Barcola, a supreme talent who bends the template, or move decisively for Savinho, a cheaper, closer fit to the shape of the attack they have just lost.
