Liverpool's Tributes to Kevin Keegan: Honouring a Club Legend
Anfield is getting ready to say goodbye to one of its greats.
Liverpool have confirmed a series of tributes to honour Kevin Keegan, the club legend who died last month at the age of 75, with commemorations planned across pre-season and the opening weeks of the new campaign.
Keegan arrived from Scunthorpe United in 1971 and changed the course of Liverpool’s history. Across six glittering years on Merseyside he helped haul the club to three league titles, a European Cup, two Uefa Cups and an FA Cup, becoming the driving force of Bill Shankly’s final side and a standard-bearer for the era that followed.
Now the club he helped transform will pause to remember him.
Tributes across pre-season and the Premier League kick-off
Liverpool have revealed that their pre-season friendly against AS Monaco on 9 August will carry the first formal tribute. The matchday programme will be dedicated to Keegan’s life and career at Anfield and will feature a commemorative front cover in his honour.
The emotional focus will intensify once the competitive action begins.
The club confirmed it is in contact with Newcastle United to arrange “special tributes” before the Premier League season opener between the sides on 23 August. Keegan’s name binds the clubs together – a hero in red as a player, a talisman in black and white as a manager – and both sets of supporters will have the chance to pay their respects.
Anfield to stand for a legend
Liverpool’s first home fixture of the season, against Nottingham Forest on 29 August, will become a focal point for remembrance. The club announced that players will wear black armbands and a minute’s silence will be held before kick-off.
The Kop will play its part. A special fan mosaic is planned, a familiar Anfield ritual reserved for the giants of the club’s story, while the big screens around the stadium will show a series of tributes to Keegan’s career and his impact on Liverpool.
As it will be the first home game since his passing, the club also confirmed that a period of applause will be observed before the match, with black armbands again worn by the players as a visible mark of respect.
From Scunthorpe to Anfield, from league titles to European glory, Keegan helped build the platform on which Liverpool still stand. Over the coming weeks, the club and its supporters will let him feel that one last time.
