Liverpool Urged to Make Bold Move for Trent Alexander-Arnold Amid Real Madrid Struggles
Liverpool might be on the verge of bringing Trent Alexander-Arnold back to Anfield after just one year at Real Madrid. The England defender's move to Spain has not gone as planned, with difficulties settling in and limited playing time sparking talk of a return to his former club.
Why Liverpool Should Act Now
Andy Townsend, former Chelsea midfielder, has urged Liverpool to take advantage of Alexander-Arnold's uncertain situation at Madrid. Townsend highlighted the current needs of Liverpool under new manager Andoni Iraola and believes the right-back would significantly boost the team.
"If he came back to Liverpool, would he improve them? One hundred per cent, yes," Townsend said on talkSPORT. "I haven’t really seen a player like [Jeremie] Frimpong as a right back who delivers what Trent can do easily. Full-backs are vital to attack now, and Trent’s final delivery is exceptional."
Still, Townsend acknowledged that some fans might find it hard to accept the return.
Mourinho’s Arrival Shifts Alexander-Arnold’s Role
Jose Mourinho's arrival at Madrid complicated matters for Alexander-Arnold. Mourinho favors a more defensively disciplined approach at right-back, preferring Denzel Dumfries, whose style fits Mourinho’s system better. This preference leaves Alexander-Arnold battling for a place in the starting lineup.
Townsend pointed out that Madrid has plenty of options in that area, including Federico Valverde, making Alexander-Arnold less indispensable.
"Madrid have signed Dumfries from Inter, who fits Mourinho’s profile better," Townsend remarked. "With other versatile players available, Trent will want to be sure he has a chance to start this season."
Challenging First Season in Spain
The defender’s debut La Liga season was marked by injuries and managerial changes, limiting him to 14 league starts. This disruption prevented him from gaining momentum or fully adapting to Madrid’s setup.
Townsend suggested a season-long loan back to Liverpool could reignite Alexander-Arnold’s career and help him regain confidence.
"It must have been disappointing for him not to get going," Townsend said. "If Liverpool can arrange a loan deal, even at £5million to £10million, it would be worth it to bring him back because he is top quality."
Alexander-Arnold’s View on Training with Mourinho
Despite uncertainties, Alexander-Arnold has shown professionalism and respect toward Mourinho and the new coaching staff. The Liverpool academy product praised the coach’s intensity and high standards.
