Liverpool Weighing Move for Tottenham's Djed Spence

Liverpool are weighing up a move for Tottenham defender Djed Spence, with the full-back described as “extremely receptive” to the idea of swapping north London for Anfield.

Two clubs, two very different summers. Tottenham have already pushed six new signings through the door. Liverpool, by contrast, have added just two, one of those – Jeremy Jacquet – effectively banked months ago via a pre-agreement.

Yet it is Liverpool who suddenly look the more anxious in defence.

Liverpool’s defensive alarm bells

Andoni Iraola has problems he cannot ignore. Depth at the back is thin, and the right-hand side in particular has become a concern before a competitive ball has even been kicked.

Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni are both set to miss the start of the season through injury. Joe Gomez has already suffered a muscle issue in pre-season. For a manager who wants intensity and aggression in every phase, that is a fragile platform to build from.

Iraola has asked FSG for defensive reinforcements, a request flagged in late July. Liverpool’s recruitment team have been scanning for options who can cover multiple roles across the back line and adapt quickly to a demanding style.

Djed Spence fits that brief.

Spence ready to jump at Anfield chance

Spence, 25, has long been viewed as one of the more versatile full-backs in Tottenham’s squad, and Liverpool’s interest is not new. AnfieldIndex had previously reported that the club liked him as a potential solution.

Now, according to Anfield Sector, the player himself would “jump at the chance” to join Liverpool. On X, they reported: “Liverpool have an interest in Tottenham defender Djed Spence. Spence is said to be extremely receptive to the idea of a move to Liverpool. Andoni Iraola has defensive concerns around the current right-backs. Not the only name under consideration so no clarity whether progresses but definite interest even if downplayed.”

The update was shared in conjunction with X account @szyexcl, a handle that has built a reputation among Tottenham supporters as being plugged in to the club’s dealings. Their message ran in parallel: “Understand liverpool hold an interest in Djed Spence. Player would be very open to Liverpool if an offer arises. Spurs would seek at least £35m.”

The stance is clear on all sides. Liverpool like the player. The player wants Liverpool. Tottenham will sell – at the right price.

Tottenham’s reshaping and the £35m question

Tottenham’s window has been defined by volume and ambition. Six signings already, and they are not done. Savinho is the headline target for the right wing. A left winger or a centre-forward is also on the agenda as they attempt to sharpen the attack for the season ahead.

That attacking rebuild has knock-on effects. Spurs are open to trimming elsewhere, and Spence sits in that bracket of saleable depth. A fee of at least £35m has been floated as the starting point for negotiations.

For a defender who has not yet fully established himself as a Premier League regular for Tottenham, that is a significant valuation. For Liverpool, it poses a straight question: is Spence the right player to justify that outlay in a summer when other areas also need attention?

Moving parts at Anfield

Liverpool’s recruitment puzzle does not end at right-back. The club are juggling multiple priorities.

Up front, Cody Gakpo is in Tottenham’s sights. Liverpool could sanction his departure if they land a direct replacement, with Bradley Barcola currently the primary target for the wide attacking role. The club are also exploring a move for Barcola’s PSG teammate, Ibrahim Mbaye.

So Liverpool stand at a crossroads: rebuild the forward line, reinforce a stretched defence, and do it all with a budget that must be spread, not splurged.

Spence is not the only defender on their list. Anfield Sector stressed that other names are under consideration and that the interest, while “definite”, is being played down publicly. But the logic is hard to ignore. A 25-year-old, ultra-versatile full-back, open to the move, at a club willing to sell.

The next decision rests in Liverpool’s hands. Do they push hard for Spence at Tottenham’s price, or keep their powder dry and look elsewhere as the window tightens and the new season looms?
