Liverpool Tracks PSG's Rising Star Ibrahim Mbaye Amid Bradley Barcola Negotiation Standoff
Liverpool has set its sights on Paris Saint-Germain's Senegalese winger, Ibrahim Mbaye, who is eager for more first-team action. At just 18, Mbaye is considering a move away from the French club to secure regular playing time, with Anfield among his preferred destinations.
Despite no official bid yet, Mbaye shows interest in joining Liverpool. Yet, competition is fierce as German side Bayer Leverkusen is already deep in negotiations with PSG for the youngster’s transfer. The asking price from PSG stands at around €50 million but could rise given the current market inflation.
Bayer Leverkusen Leads Transfer Talks
Leverkusen appears to have an advantage, thanks to positive relations between PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Leverkusen's Fernando Carro. The German club is pushing forward in talks, hoping to secure Mbaye’s signature soon.
Mbaye, often described as an "African phenomenon," featured 24 times and scored three goals in Ligue 1 last season. Despite his promise, his opportunities at PSG are limited due to tough competition from teammates Desire Doue and Bradley Barcola. Moreover, PSG is bringing in new wide attackers like Maghnes Akliouche from Monaco for about €50 million and pursuing other wingers, which may further reduce Mbaye’s chances to play.
Barcola Negotiations Stall Over Price
While Liverpool eyes Mbaye, they are also involved in talks to sign Barcola, another talented PSG winger. Early discussions have taken place, with Liverpool willing to offer approximately €100 million. Barcola himself wants the move, and personal terms seem achievable.
The main obstacle remains PSG's steep valuation of €170 million, influenced by Barcola’s impressive World Cup showing where he netted three goals and assisted once for France. PSG highlights his consecutive Champions League wins to justify the high fee.
Potential for Price Drops Could Influence Decisions
PSG insists any transfer fee for Barcola must surpass recent Premier League records, such as Elliot Anderson’s £116 million and Morgan Rogers’ £117 million moves. This firm stance exists despite Barcola having only two years left on his contract and rejecting a renewal.
There is speculation the price might drop as August progresses, especially once PSG completes its recruitment of wide players. This could lead to more flexible negotiations regarding player sales. Liverpool must now decide whether to make a formal offer for Mbaye or wait for a possible decrease in Barcola’s price before the transfer window closes.
