Liverpool Target Bradley Barcola as Bayern Munich Step Aside
Liverpool’s search for the heir to Mohamed Salah has narrowed to one name: Bradley Barcola. And the field around him is starting to clear.
The club have already brought in one wide player this summer, completing a deal for Spain international Victor Munoz from Osasuna. That move, though, was never designed to close the door on another winger. Liverpool want a headline act for the right flank, a forward capable of easing the void left by Salah’s departure at the end of last season. Barcola has moved to the top of that list.
For months, RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande had been the preferred option. Liverpool even went as far as submitting a bid. Now Diomande is on course for Real Madrid, and the Merseyside club have had to pivot quickly. The focus has shifted to Paris, where Barcola’s situation at Paris Saint-Germain has opened a window of opportunity.
The 23-year-old is not expected to sign a new deal at the Parc des Princes, and the lure of Anfield has grown stronger. Behind the scenes, the lines are busy.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano outlined the state of play on Friday, making it clear that the dialogue is constant.
“Contacts continue between Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and the player’s representatives,” he reported, stressing that the sticking point lies in only one area: the fee.
On the player’s side, the path looks clear. There is no concern about contract length, salary, or his role in the project. By all accounts, Barcola is enthusiastic about the move and eager to join Liverpool. Personal terms are not expected to be an obstacle.
The negotiation, then, comes down to Liverpool’s willingness to meet PSG’s valuation. The Premier League side know they will have to make a sizeable financial commitment, and the deal hinges on where they draw that line. A bid will come; the club are expected to formalise their interest. Agreement with the player is viewed as a formality. The real battle is with PSG’s balance sheet.
That battle may not be swift. PSG have already lost several attacking players this summer and are juggling other pieces of business. They need time to secure replacements before they sanction the departure of another important forward. Until those dominoes fall, Liverpool wait.
Bayern watching, but not bidding
In the background, Bayern Munich have been hovering around Barcola’s camp for two summers. They know the player well, have stayed in touch with his representatives and kept him on their shortlist. On paper, they look like the sort of heavyweight who could complicate Liverpool’s plans.
In reality, they are stepping aside.
Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk detailed Bayern’s position, explaining that the Bundesliga champions have tracked Barcola closely, speaking with his management last summer and the one before. Even this year, Bayern checked in again, asking about his situation and long-term intentions, with his current PSG deal running until 2028 and no extension talks under way.
That lack of movement on a new contract means Barcola’s theoretical price drops year by year. Just not far enough for Bayern in this window.
For now, the left-sided winger is simply too expensive for the German club. Liverpool, Falk notes, do not have the same issue. They are closer to a deal, and with Diomande heading to Real Madrid, their need for a player of Barcola’s profile has become more acute.
Bayern’s interest is more strategic than immediate. They could turn to Barcola in the future, depending on how the situation of Michael Olise develops. Olise is set to stay this summer, but next year could bring a decisive moment: a new contract or a sale. If Bayern are forced into the market for a replacement, Barcola would be their number one option.
That plan only survives if Barcola remains in Paris for another season. If Liverpool move now and get their man, Falk is blunt: there is “no chance” for Bayern.
Liverpool, then, find themselves in a rare position in the modern market: leading the race for a coveted young attacker without Bayern Munich breathing down their necks. The only question left is whether they are prepared to pay the price PSG demand to turn Barcola’s enthusiasm into a new era on the right wing at Anfield.
