Liverpool Reject Bayern's Interest in Rio Ngumoha

Liverpool have drawn a thick red line through Rio Ngumoha’s name on Bayern Munich’s wishlist – and made it clear the teenage winger’s future lies only at Anfield.

The 17-year-old, fresh from a breakout 2025/26 campaign and a first senior England cap, has become the subject of intense speculation after reports that Bayern were readying a major move to prise him away from Merseyside. His numbers were modest on paper – three goal contributions in just 551 Premier League minutes – but inside Liverpool those minutes are viewed as the start of something far bigger, not a shop window.

When word emerged that Bayern were circling, the mood at Anfield hardened quickly. Club sources made it known they were furious that interest from the German champions had leaked at all, and even more annoyed by suggestions that terms had already been agreed with Ngumoha’s camp.

That anger has now been echoed publicly. Speaking to the BBC, journalist Lewis Bower relayed the blunt message he has received from within the club: Liverpool will not entertain any scenario in which Ngumoha leaves this summer.

“I do have a particularly well-placed person in academy football at a consultation, somebody who works in sports consultation,” Bower said. “I believe he said to me it’s from the best possible source, so take from that what you will. I’d never tweet anything that I didn’t believe to be true, but yeah, it stands by absolutely no chance of that happening.”

No chance. Not this window, not at this stage of his development. That is the line from Anfield.

Outrage at Bayern talk, not interest

Inside Liverpool, there is no surprise that a club of Bayern’s stature, now led by Vincent Kompany, admire Ngumoha. Kompany is understood to be a big fan of the winger’s talent. The irritation lies elsewhere.

Transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey reported that Anfield figures are “deeply unhappy” with claims Bayern have already struck an agreement with Ngumoha and his representatives. The word from the club is even stronger: there is “outrage” at suggestions that any such deal is in place, and absolute confidence that Bayern will not cross the line into an illegal approach.

From Liverpool’s perspective, the story is being framed all wrong. This is not a tug-of-war. There is no battle to win. They insist there has “never been any doubt” over Ngumoha’s long-term future on Merseyside.

The stance is simple: Bayern may admire him, but Liverpool are not listening.

Contract plan already in motion

The firmness of that position is backed by planning behind the scenes. Ngumoha only signed a three-year deal last September, tying him to Liverpool until 2028 after his move from Chelsea in 2024. That agreement was always a starting point, not the destination.

Under current rules, 17-year-olds can sign contracts of no more than three years. Liverpool knew from the moment the ink dried that they would be back at the table as soon as he approached his 18th birthday.

That moment is almost here. Ngumoha turns 18 on August 29, and Liverpool intend to move quickly once he does. Bailey reports that the club are already mapping out the “next stage” of his development, with plans to open talks on an upgraded deal and a significant pay rise that reflects his growing importance in the squad.

The message is consistent from every angle. TEAMtalk’s information is that Liverpool view Ngumoha as one of the most exciting young players at the club and have “no intention of entertaining any possibility” of his departure. The focus, they insist, is entirely on securing his long-term future and building the team around what he can become, not cashing in on what he already is.

For Bayern, that means one of Europe’s brightest young wingers is off limits. For Liverpool, it means the countdown to August 29 is not a nervous wait, but the moment they formalise what they already believe: Rio Ngumoha is a player they plan to grow with, not sell.
