Liverpool Negotiates with PSG for Bradley Barcola
Liverpool have opened the door to one of the boldest moves of the summer, holding early talks with Paris Saint-Germain over Bradley Barcola – but the numbers on the table could yet slam it shut.
PSG, Champions League holders and in no mood to be bullied in the market, value the 23-year-old at a staggering £145m. Liverpool are nowhere near that figure. For now, the gap is not a difference of opinion; it is a gulf.
Club-to-club discussions have taken place, and Liverpool have also spoken to Barcola’s representatives. The interest is real. The deal is not close.
A winger rebuild after Salah
Andoni Iraola has made it clear, in style if not in soundbites: his Liverpool will run through its wingers. That was the case at Bournemouth, and before that at Rayo Vallecano, where pace, aggression and relentless work-rate out wide underpinned everything.
On Merseyside, the need is sharper. Mohamed Salah has gone, and Liverpool’s first transfer window under Iraola is being built around the wide areas. The plan is ambitious. By the end of the window, Liverpool want five wingers in the squad, one of them a younger project to develop alongside more established options.
Barcola sits firmly in the latter category. This is not a punt. This is a move for a player who has already lived at the sharp end of elite football.
Nine major trophies in two years – including two Champions League titles – tell their own story about the level he has operated at since joining PSG from Lyon in 2023 for around £40m. Liverpool see a winger schooled in high-pressure games, with the physical profile and tactical intelligence to plug straight into Iraola’s high-octane blueprint.
Barcola’s stance – and PSG’s
Barcola has two years left on his PSG contract and has made it clear he will not be signing an extension. The France international has grown frustrated with a lack of consistent game time and, crucially for Liverpool, the idea of Anfield appeals to him.
That is one battle won. The real fight is with PSG’s valuation.
For any deal to move beyond theory, the French champions would have to climb down from the £145m price tag. Liverpool know it. PSG know it. The question is whether the European champions feel any pressure to blink.
Their recent business suggests not. PSG have already shifted three forwards this summer – Goncalo Ramos, Randal Kolo Muani and Kang-In Lee – but that has not translated into a willingness to cash in on Barcola. Internally, they still see him as a player to keep, not a spare part to sell.
Akliouche, Godts and a crowded PSG wing
On Thursday, PSG added another winger, Magnes Akliouche, from Monaco in a £42.8m deal. Liverpool had tracked the France international, but once PSG arrived, the outcome was straightforward: Akliouche, who grew up in the Paris region, wanted the move to the capital.
PSG are also in advanced talks with Ajax over winger Mika Godts. On paper, that is a lot of width for one squad. It would be easy to assume the door is opening for Barcola to leave.
Inside PSG, the view is different. Akliouche and Godts are not seen as direct replacements for Barcola. Their arrivals do not automatically push him towards the exit. If anything, they underline PSG’s determination to stockpile attacking options while keeping hold of a player they rate highly.
Liverpool, then, cannot rely on Paris clearing a path for them. They will have to create it.
Mbaye pursuit runs on separate track
While the Barcola saga simmers, Liverpool are working another flank. The club have explored a deal for PSG’s 18-year-old winger Ibrahim Mbaye, who predominantly operates from the right and is believed to be keen on a move to Anfield.
Crucially, Liverpool’s interest in Mbaye is completely independent of the Barcola chase. This is not an either-or scenario. It is possible – and within the club’s planning – that they sign Mbaye as the young development piece and still bring in a more experienced winger on top.
For Iraola, that blend matters. The model he built at Bournemouth and Rayo relied on wingers who could not only hurt teams in transition but also press, chase and cover every blade of grass. Mbaye offers raw potential. Barcola would bring proven pedigree.
Arsenal watching from the wings
Liverpool are not alone in their admiration. Arsenal, still smarting from missing out on Vinicius Junior after his Real Madrid contract extension, also hold an interest in Barcola.
The Gunners’ presence adds another layer of tension to a market already distorted by PSG’s valuation. If the price drops, Liverpool will not be the only club at the table.
The next move
For now, the situation is clear. Liverpool want Barcola. Barcola likes the idea of Liverpool. PSG want to keep him and have set a price designed to do exactly that.
Somewhere between those positions lies the only figure that matters.
If PSG edge towards it, Iraola could yet land a winger who fits perfectly into his ferocious, wide-driven system. If they stand firm, Liverpool’s winger rebuild will have to find its headline act elsewhere – and the question will be whether they can match their manager’s ambition without the calibre of player he has set his sights on.
