Liverpool's Last-Minute Loan Bid for Chelsea's Malo Gusto Falls Through
Liverpool attempted a last-minute loan move to acquire Chelsea right-back Malo Gusto on transfer deadline day, but the deal fell apart due to disagreements between the two clubs over financial terms.
Deadline Day Negotiations Collapse
The Merseyside club aimed to strengthen their defense by adding the 23-year-old Gusto to Andoni Iraola's squad. According to journalist Fabrice Hawkins, Liverpool pursued a straightforward loan deal without any purchase obligation. Yet, Chelsea insisted on a permanent sale, creating an impasse that prevented the transfer from going through.
Financial Disagreements Halt Transfer
Chelsea valued the defender at around £75 million earlier in the summer when Manchester City showed interest. Liverpool were unwilling to commit to such a costly permanent transfer, especially after investing in players like Jeremy Jacquet, Victor Munoz, Ronald Araujo, and Bradley Barcola during this transfer window.
This fundamental difference in transfer approach meant Liverpool could not finalize the deal, with Chelsea demanding a substantial long-term financial commitment before approving any departure.
Gusto to Stay at Stamford Bridge
With the move off the table, Gusto remains part of Chelsea's plans under manager Xabi Alonso. The French right-back has started in recent Premier League wins against Fulham and Brighton, as well as featuring in the Carabao Cup victory over Luton. His athleticism and tactical fit have impressed, and he is expected to start again against Arsenal in the upcoming league match.
Impact on Liverpool’s Defense
Without Gusto, Liverpool will depend on current defensive options. Jeremie Frimpong remains Iraola's primary choice at right-back, while hopes rest on Conor Bradley recovering quickly from his knee injury sustained in January. The team faces a busy schedule across domestic and European competitions.
