Liverpool's Early Move for Rayan Amid Barcola Pursuit
Liverpool have agreed personal terms “in principle” with Bournemouth’s Brazilian winger Rayan, setting up a potential summer move if the south-coast club decide to cash in.
A well-placed source on X (formerly Twitter) urged supporters to keep a close eye on the situation, with Liverpool working on the Rayan option while simultaneously pushing to land Bradley Barcola from PSG.
The message is clear: Liverpool want a winger. And they want one now.
A 19-year-old who handled the Premier League storm
Rayan’s numbers from his first half-season in the Premier League explain the interest. At just 19, the right-sided attacker produced seven goal contributions – five goals and two assists – in 15 league appearances. Not bad in any context. Even more impressive in a campaign that turned hostile for wide players.
Last season’s Premier League tilted towards muscle and set-pieces. Games became more fractured, territory more important, and creative wingers often found themselves bullied out of contests. Rayan bucked that trend. He found space, carried the ball, and made decisive contributions in a landscape that did not favour his profile.
That alone makes him a serious candidate for a Liverpool side in need of fresh energy on the flanks.
Not Diomande, but a live solution
Rayan will not generate the same buzz as Yan Diomande, the Ivorian forward who looks set for a glamour move after a standout year in Germany and is now strongly linked with Real Madrid. Diomande, by most assessments, is further along in his development.
But Liverpool are shopping in a market that is shrinking fast.
Diomande appears Madrid-bound. PSG are actively working on a deal for Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche. The tier of wide forwards Liverpool initially targeted is being stripped away, piece by piece. That is where Rayan becomes more than just a name on a list; he becomes a realistic, attainable solution.
If Liverpool miss out on both Rayan and Barcola, the recruitment picture changes sharply. The conversation quickly drops to the level of players such as Yankuba Minteh and Matias Fernandez-Pardo. With respect to those emerging talents, that is not the bracket Liverpool expected to be operating in when this window opened.
One marquee winger, not two
Despite talk of dual pursuits, nobody inside the game expects Liverpool to sign both Rayan and Bradley Barcola this summer. The admiration is there for each, but the finances are not.
Liverpool spent heavily last year, sanctioning record-breaking deals in a single window for Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. That level of outlay is not on the table this time. The club is working to a tighter budget while also trying to give Andoni Iraola the squad depth he needs ahead of the 2026/27 season.
That reality shapes the strategy. Barcola remains at the top of Richard Hughes’ list. Liverpool are pushing that deal and treating Rayan as a parallel track: a move they are ready to trigger if negotiations with PSG stall or collapse.
It is not a scattergun approach. It is a hedge against a difficult market.
The release clause clock
Timing matters. Bournemouth have inserted a £130m release clause in Rayan’s contract, according to iPaper, which activates in January. Once that kicks in, the conversation changes. At that price, Rayan becomes a luxury, not a clever pick-up.
This summer is different. If Bournemouth are open to a sale before that clause comes into force, Liverpool believe they can land him for a fee in the same broad region as any potential Barcola deal – what has already been dubbed “Barcola money”.
So the equation is simple. If Liverpool cannot break PSG’s resistance over Barcola, they pivot hard to Rayan. If they can, the Brazilian may stay put on the south coast, at least for now.
Liverpool’s recruitment team know the clock is ticking. Five weeks to reshape the wings, keep Iraola’s first season on track, and decide which young wide forward will carry the club’s future down that right flank.
