Liverpool's Diomande Pursuit as Salah Era Ends

Liverpool’s Salah succession plan has taken a sharp, expensive twist – and a 19-year-old tormenting defenders at a World Cup now sits at the heart of it.

Liverpool push on Diomande as Salah era winds down

Mohamed Salah’s nine-year spell at Anfield is heading for its final chapter, and Liverpool know they cannot drift into the post-Salah era unprepared. The club’s new sporting director, Richard Hughes, has fixed firmly on Yan Diomande as the man to carry the right flank into the next decade.

Liverpool made contact with RB Leipzig as far back as December, but the German club have never pretended they are easy sellers. They see Diomande as a cornerstone, not a commodity, and believe another season in the Bundesliga and Europe will only drive his value even higher.

Leipzig’s stance is reflected in the numbers being whispered around recruitment circles. Talks are expected to open at around €100m (£87m, $116m) and could climb towards €120m (£104m, $140m). Those are elite, statement-signing figures. Liverpool know it. Leipzig know it. And now, after the weekend, the rest of Europe does too.

World Cup stage, Liverpool noise

Diomande’s price tag gained fresh oxygen on Sunday. Lining up for Ivory Coast in a 1-0 World Cup win over Ecuador, the teenager delivered the kind of performance that makes recruitment departments lean forward in their seats.

He ran at defenders. He slipped away from challenges. He completed four dribbles and turned Arsenal’s Piero Hincapie into a reluctant sparring partner, constantly forced onto the back foot. It was the sort of duel that hints at what Premier League full-backs might be dealing with before long.

On the touchline, Ivory Coast coach Emerse Fae watched a player who is suddenly at the centre of Europe’s transfer conversation. And he knows it.

“When we were in France, during the preparation, journalists told me he was about to sign with PSG,” Fae said after the Group E win. “Here, they tell me he’s about to sign with Liverpool!

“I don’t know, but for now, he will focus on the World Cup, and then afterwards, he can think about the rest of his career…”

The message is clear: Diomande’s future can wait. The World Cup cannot. Any club wanting to close this deal will need patience, not just money.

A coach’s glowing verdict

Fae did not hold back when asked to assess his young winger’s display.

“Yan – what can I say? I can’t put it into words,” he admitted, before trying anyway. He praised Diomande’s raw talent, his age, and the scope for improvement that still lies ahead.

“He’s very talented, but beyond the talent, he’s very young, and he’ll improve.

“He’s a kid who works hard, has a real team spirit, laughs with everyone, and he listens, listens to the technical staff whenever he’s given advice, and tries to do his best, as he’s told.

“It’s easy to work with someone like Yan, he’s so talented and has what is needed, plus he can give you the victory and was a real challenge for Hincapié, a Champions League finalist.”

Those are the kind of references that push a player from “highly rated” into “must-have” territory. Inside Liverpool, the belief is that Diomande has already given the green light to a move to Anfield. The will of the player is aligned. The obstacle now lies in Leipzig’s valuation and structure.

Gakpo the key to a mega swap?

At those prices, Liverpool cannot simply shrug and pay up without exploring creative options. One route being discussed by sources close to the situation is a swap deal that would see Cody Gakpo heading in the opposite direction.

The idea is simple: reduce the cash outlay by including a high-value, versatile forward who fits the Bundesliga profile. Gakpo’s age, technical level and tactical flexibility make him an obvious candidate for a club like Leipzig, who specialise in polishing and reselling talent.

For Liverpool, the calculation is cold but clear. If Diomande is the chosen heir to Salah and a long-term pillar of the attack, then sacrificing an existing forward to land him might be the price of evolution.

Barcola on the radar as winger rebuild looms

Diomande is not the only winger in Liverpool’s sights. The club are casting the net wide as they reshape their attacking line for life after their Egyptian talisman.

Reporter Graeme Bailey has confirmed that Bradley Barcola wants to leave PSG and is emerging as a big-money target for both Liverpool and Arsenal. Another young, high-ceiling wide player. Another potential piece in a new-look front line.

Liverpool stand at a crossroads: Salah leaving, Diomande eager, Leipzig resisting, Barcola agitating for a move. The money will be heavy, the decisions even heavier.

How bold are they prepared to be to secure the next great Anfield winger?
