Manchester City Reject £55m Barcelona Bid for Rodri

Manchester City have knocked back a fresh £55m offer from Barcelona for Rodri, drawing a firm line in the sand over the future of their midfield lynchpin.

The Catalan club had already seen an opening bid of around £40m rejected last week. They came back stronger, raising the proposal into the £50m–£60m bracket, but City have again said no. The new figure still falls short of what the Premier League champions want.

City value the 30-year-old at upwards of £60m and, crucially, remain intent on keeping him. Rodri is into the final year of his contract, yet talks over an extension are ongoing and City’s preference is clear: build around him, not cash in.

Barcelona, though, are not walking away. Determined to land Spain’s World Cup-winning captain, they are weighing up their next move as they try to prise one of Europe’s most influential midfielders out of the Etihad.

City’s stance has been consistent this summer. They do not want to sell. The only caveat is Rodri himself. If he formally asks to leave, the club are not expected to stand in his way, a nuance that gives Barcelona a sliver of encouragement as the window rumbles on.

Reijnders talks with Al Qadsiah add to midfield intrigue

While City fight to keep Rodri, another central midfielder could be heading for the exit.

The club are in advanced, positive discussions with Saudi Arabian side Al Qadsiah over a deal for Tijjani Reijnders. The proposed package is worth around £51.3m (€60m), underlining how highly the Saudi club rate him.

Al Qadsiah see Reijnders as a world-class, peak-age signing to anchor their midfield ahead of a first Asian Champions League campaign. The timing is symbolic too: they are preparing to move into their new Aramco Stadium and want a marquee presence in the middle of the pitch.

If Reijnders departs and Barcelona eventually manage to tempt Rodri away, City could lose two central midfielders in the same window. The recruitment plan already reflects that risk.

The champions are looking at bringing in potentially two midfielders, with active interest in Enzo Fernandez and Ayyoub Bouaddi. How aggressively they move for those targets may well depend on whether Barcelona keep knocking on the door for Rodri – and whether the Spaniard ever decides he wants to open it.
