Liverpool's Barcola Pursuit Hits Wall as Arsenal Waits
Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola has hit a wall – and a very expensive one at that.
The Premier League club, still searching for a replacement for Mohamed Salah after his surprise free transfer to Trabzonspor last week, have identified the Paris Saint-Germain winger as a marquee solution for their right flank. Barcola wants the move. Liverpool want the player. PSG, though, want £145 million.
That is where everything stops.
Talks between the clubs have been running for some time, but the gap in valuation has barely budged. PSG have set their price and are standing firm. Liverpool, for all their need and ambition, are refusing to be dragged into a fee they consider excessive.
The result is a stand-off with the clock ticking. Deadline day is only three weeks away, and what began as a bold attempt to reshape Andoni Iraola’s attack now risks becoming a drawn-out saga with no happy ending for Liverpool.
Inside the negotiations, the message is increasingly clear: if PSG will not move, Liverpool will. The club are prepared to walk away and switch focus to alternative targets, conscious that Iraola’s squad still looks thin in forward areas after Salah’s exit and with a long season looming.
Barcola, a France international with the kind of pace and directness that fits the Premier League narrative perfectly, is keen to boost his minutes and step into a more central role elsewhere. But PSG’s stance has turned his ambition into leverage they are in no mood to surrender.
Arsenal's Interest
And that is where Arsenal come in.
The London club have been waiting for the right moment to strike for a big attacking name after missing out on Vinicius Junior, who chose to extend his stay at Real Madrid rather than test himself in England. That snub has not dulled Arsenal’s appetite for a blockbuster addition.
They have already brought in Christos Tzolis on the left, yet the recruitment drive is not over. Arsenal retain a strong interest in Barcola and are watching the Liverpool-PSG impasse with quiet satisfaction. If Liverpool do indeed walk away, a clear lane may open for Mikel Arteta’s side.
Arteta has already laid down the marker for the rest of the window. “Well, that's what we're trying to do,” he said when asked about more arrivals. “If we have the right player in the market to make us much better, we are very looking forward to that.”
The “right player” might just be the one Liverpool are on the verge of abandoning.
For now, PSG hold all the cards: a prized asset under contract, a fixed price, and two English heavyweights circling. Liverpool must decide how far they are willing to bend their strategy for a single signing. Arsenal must decide how aggressively they want to test PSG’s resolve if the Merseyside club steps aside.
One winger, one price tag, two clubs with title ambitions. Someone will blink. The question is who, and how much it will cost them – on the pitch as much as in the bank.
