Lionel Messi Set to Acquire Spanish Second-Division Club CD Eldense

Lionel Messi, the star of Inter Miami CF, is poised to take complete control of CD Eldense, a team competing in Spain's Segunda Division. The Argentine forward has agreed in principle to buy all shares of the Alicante-based club, marking another step in expanding his football business interests in Spain.

Deal Awaits Official Approval

The agreement reportedly covers 100% ownership with no involvement from third parties. After a thorough due diligence process, the final step is waiting for green light from Spain's Higher Sports Council (CSD) expected soon. This takeover would come after an international investment group led by Juan Carlos Trujillo previously owned the club since October 2025. Although Argentine investor Ricardo Pini had shown interest with a €12 million offer, Messi's entry reshaped the negotiations sharply.

Messi Family Grows Football Holdings

This acquisition extends the Messi family's presence in football management. Earlier this year, they purchased UE Cornella, a Spanish fifth-tier side. Alongside close friend Luis Suarez, Messi has also invested in Uruguay's Deportivo LSM. His brother Matias plays a significant role as president at Lions FC, highlighting the family's growing footprint in the sport’s governance.

Current Challenges at CD Eldense

On the field, Eldense faces difficulties after parting ways with coach Claudio Barragan, following a poor start of just two points in four matches. The club needs a quick replacement to stop slipping down the Segunda Division table. Messi’s upcoming role as majority owner is expected to bring financial stability and clearer strategic direction to the struggling club.
