Lionel Messi's Future in International Football: Argentina Awaits His Decision

Lionel Messi has earned the right to call time on his own legend, and Argentina’s most powerful football voice is not about to argue.

Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia, president of the Argentina Football Association, made it clear on national television that no one in Buenos Aires – not the federation, not the coaching staff, not the fans – will push Messi toward the exit.

“It’s a decision that is purely and personally his,” Tapia said, underlining that the greatest player in Argentina’s history will dictate his own farewell. “You have to let him relax.”

The stance comes after a World Cup summer in which Messi, at 39, looked anything but finished. Two days after his birthday on June 24, he scored twice against Austria in the group stage, part of a tournament where he produced eight goals and four assists for La Albiceleste. For a player whose legacy was already sealed with the 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar, this was supposed to be an epilogue.

Instead, it felt like a sequel.

Back in 2022, no one inside the Argentina camp could say with certainty whether Messi would even consider playing at the 2026 World Cup. He framed it then as a “game by game” journey, and Tapia echoed that sense of uncertainty, while marvelling at what followed.

“I think we’ve seen a great version – if not the best – of Leo in a World Cup,” Tapia said.

That is the crux of the dilemma for everyone except Messi. How do you tell a man to stop when he is still redefining what the end of a career can look like?

For now, there are no clues from the player himself. Messi has given no indication of when he plans to step away from international football, nor how long he intends to keep pulling the strings for Inter Miami in MLS. His calendar remains packed, his influence undimmed, his decisions private.

Tapia’s message, though, is unambiguous. Argentina will not script the final chapter. The country that watched him drag the national team to the summit in 2022, then watched him dominate again this summer, will simply wait.

Messi will decide when the story ends.
