Lewis Koumas: Adapting to Liverpool’s Tempo

At 20, Lewis Koumas is still learning what it means to live at Liverpool’s tempo. On Sunday at Anfield, in a 3-2 pre-season defeat to AS Monaco, he was given 75 minutes to show he belongs in that rhythm.

For him, this wasn’t just another friendly. It was a long look at the level he wants to call home.

Koumas, fresh from a loan spell at Hull City in the second half of last season, has spent the summer shoulder to shoulder with Liverpool’s senior players. That daily exposure, he believes, is sharpening every part of his game.

"It's always good and obviously I train with them every day, so it's always good to try to take bits of their game and put it into mine," the Wales international told Liverpoolfc.com. Those are the words of a young forward who understands the value of proximity to elite standards.

You could see that mindset in his work without the ball. The instructions are clear. The bar is even clearer.

"He [Iraola] is just encouraging me to just play my game, press, work hard and continue to try to adapt to how he wants us to play."

Press. Work. Adapt. No hiding places in that brief.

Koumas insists he has never felt better prepared for it. "It's the best I've ever felt physically, so I've just got to keep training." Pre-season can be unforgiving, but it can also be transformative; he sounds determined to land on the right side of that equation.

Back at Anfield, the stage felt familiar, the stakes anything but. The crowd, even in July, carries a certain demand.

"It was really good to be back at Anfield with the fans. I thought they were great," he said, reflecting on an afternoon that offered glimpses rather than a headline moment. The chances came, just not the finish.

"A few chances [for me]. I just [need to] keep getting in the area and they'll come hopefully."

That’s the next step. The movement is there, the confidence is building, the fitness is peaking. Now it’s about turning those runs into goals, and those pre-season auditions into something more permanent in Liverpool’s plans.
