Robert Lewandowski Praises Barcelona’s Rodri Signing and Reflects on Emotional Camp Nou Departure

Robert Lewandowski, now with Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer, has expressed strong approval for Barcelona's recent signing of Spanish midfielder Rodri from Manchester City. The Polish striker believes Rodri will bring valuable leadership and experience to coach Hansi Flick’s squad.

Filling the Leadership Void

After Lewandowski left Camp Nou to join MLS, Barcelona lost a key leader in their locker room. To address that gap, coach Hansi Flick targeted Rodri, identifying him as the perfect player to take over responsibilities in midfield and provide stability.

"He’s a player who knows what the team needs, how to play going forward, but also how to contribute a little more in defence," Lewandowski told Radio Marca. "He’s the kind of experienced player I think this team needs. He’s been performing at the highest level not just at the World Cup, but for many years now."

Reflecting on His Time at Barcelona

Lewandowski looked back fondly on his four seasons with the Catalan club, during which he won three La Liga titles and earned the prestigious Pichichi trophy as top scorer. Joining in 2022 from Bayern Munich, he enjoyed a successful stint before deciding to take on a new challenge abroad.

"It was a very special four years for me in Barcelona," he said. "But there comes a time when you have to try something different and take a new step, and I’m very happy now."

Adjusting to Life in the United States

The transition from European football to MLS is a big one, and Lewandowski admitted that settling into life in Chicago requires patience.

"It’s normal [to need time], not only because I’m leaving Europe, but also because I’m moving to the United States," he explained.

Staying Connected to Barcelona’s Progress

Although focused on his new journey in the U.S., Lewandowski remains a keen observer of Barcelona under Hansi Flick, confident the team will continue to thrive with Rodri anchoring the midfield.

"I’m not a very emotional person, I’m more cold-hearted, but this is a moment when I’ll always be there to support and help FC Barcelona and my former teammates," he added. "I’m watching what’s happening now and I’m sure they’re going to win a lot of games."
