KuPS and Universitatea Craiova Play to Tactical 1-1 Draw
KuPS and Universitatea Craiova produced a tactically balanced 1-1 draw at Savon Sanomat Areena, a match defined less by volume of chances and more by structure, discipline and in-game adjustments. KuPS, in a 4-2-3-1 under Miika Nuutinen, edged possession with 53% of the ball and used that share to probe patiently, while Filipe Coelho’s Craiova, set up in a 3-4-3, accepted a lower 47% share but were the more incisive side in terms of end product, finishing with a 4–1 advantage in shots on goal.
KuPS’ 4-2-3-1 was built on a conventional back four and a double pivot, designed to control central zones and feed the lone striker. With H. Riihimaki in goal, the defensive line of C. Antwi, K. Adams, B. Magassa and A. Puukko had to balance width against Craiova’s front three and aggressive wing-backs. In front of them, S. Touray and V. R. Gasc formed the midfield base, with J. Luyeye-Lutumba, T. Jyry and B. Armah supporting centre-forward J. J. Moreno Ciorciari.
Despite their territorial edge, KuPS struggled to translate possession into clear chances. One shot on goal from a total of four attempts (1 on, 2 off, 1 blocked) underlines how often their attacks stalled before the final action. Craiova’s back three of V. Screciu, N. Stevanovic and A. Rus, screened by a hard-working midfield line, generally kept KuPS in front of them and forced them wide, where crosses and half-spaces were well defended. The seven offsides against KuPS are a key tactical indicator: the home side repeatedly tried to break Craiova’s line with early runs from Moreno Ciorciari and the wide midfielders, but the Romanian side’s defensive line management and timing were excellent.
Craiova’s 3-4-3 was more vertical and punchy. With L. Popescu in goal, the back three stayed relatively compact, allowing the wing-backs and wide forwards to provide the width. The midfield quartet of N. Bancu, A. Mekvabishvili, A. Cicaldau and C. Mora had a dual role: compressing space against KuPS’ double pivot out of possession and springing quickly into transition when the ball was won. That approach is reflected in the shot profile: only eight attempts in total (4 on, 3 off, 1 blocked), but a far higher on-target ratio than KuPS.
First Half
The first half illustrated this contrast clearly. KuPS circulated the ball and committed numbers forward, but Craiova’s structure held, and the visitors were more dangerous when they broke lines. The opening goal came from that pattern: Universitatea Craiova found S. Baiaram in an advanced area, with A. Rus providing the assist, and the forward converted to give the visitors a 1-0 lead before the interval. It was the product of efficient exploitation of space rather than sustained pressure.
Nuutinen’s response was proactive. On 60 minutes, KuPS executed a triple substitution: V. R. Gasc (OUT) for S. Savolainen (IN), B. Armah (OUT) for C. Kabuye (IN), and A. Puukko (OUT) for P. Parzyszek (IN). These moves re-energised both flanks and the attacking line, adding more direct running and physical presence higher up the pitch. The changes quickly altered the momentum, with KuPS attacking more aggressively and taking greater risks between the lines.
Craiova, for their part, had already begun refreshing their front line at 59 minutes: S. Nsimba (OUT) for A. Al Hamlawi (IN), A. Cicaldau (OUT) for Teles (IN), and S. Baiaram (OUT) for D. Matei (IN). These substitutions were less about changing shape and more about maintaining intensity and defensive work rate in the wide and central attacking roles as KuPS pushed forward.
Second Half
The equaliser on 72 minutes, scored by J. J. Moreno Ciorciari and assisted by T. Jyry, encapsulated KuPS’ second-half tactical improvement. With fresher legs in advanced areas and more assertive positioning from the midfield line, KuPS finally managed to break Craiova’s compact block. Jyry’s contribution from the line of three behind the striker became more prominent as he found pockets between Craiova’s midfield and defence, and Moreno Ciorciari’s movement was rewarded.
Defensively, KuPS were aggressive, committing 19 fouls to Craiova’s 15. That higher foul count, alongside two yellow cards to KuPS and one to Craiova, reflects how often the home side had to halt transitions or contest second balls as they chased the game. Yet, despite that aggression, KuPS allowed four shots on goal, compared to the single effort they forced from Craiova, underlining that the visitors’ chance quality and shot selection were superior even when under more territorial pressure.
From a set-piece and territorial perspective, KuPS’ six corner kicks to Craiova’s two show that the Finns did manage to pin the visitors back for periods, especially after the hour mark. However, Craiova’s ability to defend those dead-ball situations, with their three centre-backs and strong aerial profiles, prevented those corners from translating into a decisive advantage.
Goalkeeper metrics are not specified numerically, but the shots-on-goal data allows a structural reading. L. Popescu (Universitatea Craiova) faced only one effort on target all match, a testament to the protection offered by his defensive unit and the effectiveness of the offside trap. H. Riihimaki (KuPS), by contrast, had to deal with four shots on goal; even without exact save numbers, the volume itself highlights how Craiova generated clearer looks at goal despite having less of the ball.
Late in the match, both coaches continued to adjust. KuPS introduced A. Heinonen for J. Luyeye-Lutumba at 73 minutes and S. Heiskanen for C. Antwi at 83 minutes, further tweaking the balance between defensive solidity and attacking ambition down the flanks and in midfield. Craiova’s later change, bringing on T. Baluta for A. Mekvabishvili at 90+5 minutes, was a final attempt to stabilise the centre as KuPS pushed for a winner.
In pure statistical terms, the draw feels like a meeting point between KuPS’ territorial control and Craiova’s superior efficiency. KuPS’ 53% possession, more corners and higher offside count describe a side trying to impose itself and stretch the game vertically, but the 1-4 deficit in shots on goal exposes their difficulty in creating high-quality chances. Craiova’s 47% possession, fewer corners and zero offsides point to a more measured, controlled attacking plan, with well-timed movements and transitions rather than constant pressure.
Tactically, KuPS will take encouragement from their second-half response and the impact of their substitutions, which shifted the game’s momentum and yielded the equaliser. Universitatea Craiova, meanwhile, can be satisfied with their compact 3-4-3, their disciplined defensive line and their ability to generate the clearer chances away from home, even if they ultimately let a winning position slip.
