Kimmich to Retain Germany Captaincy Under Klopp

Germany may be licking their wounds after a bruising Round of 32 World Cup exit, but one pillar of continuity is already emerging in the Jürgen Klopp era: Joshua Kimmich is expected to remain captain.

Rudi Völler left little room for doubt when asked at the International Coaches’ Congress in Mainz. “I assume so,” the Germany sporting director said, according to DPA, when pressed on whether Kimmich would keep the armband.

Völler did not dress it up. Kimmich, he argued, has already made his case on the pitch.

“Jo Kimmich has proven in many international matches that he is a leader and a great captain. I cannot imagine there will be any major change in that position.”

The message was clear: Klopp will arrive with fresh ideas, but he is unlikely to rip up the captaincy structure on day one.

Völler underlined that the final call belongs to the new head coach, yet pointed straight back to Klopp’s own early signals.

“We have all followed what he has said. You didn’t really get the impression that anything else was planned.”

Kimmich only took over the armband after Euro 2024, succeeding Ilkay Gündogan. Now, despite the turbulence of Germany’s latest tournament failure, all signs point to Klopp building his new national team around a captain already battle-tested in the storm.
