Kieran Trippier Ruled Out with Knee Injury on League Debut
Wolverhampton Wanderers have been dealt an early-season blow with confirmation that Kieran Trippier suffered a knee ligament injury on his league debut for the club.
The 35-year-old right-back damaged the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his left knee during Friday’s 2-2 draw with Blackburn Rovers. It was his first league appearance for Wolves after arriving on a free transfer in June.
He is expected to be sidelined “for a number of weeks”, a frustrating setback just as he was beginning a new chapter in his career following his England days.
Defensive problems did not end there. Yerson Mosquera also faces time out after picking up an injury in the same game against Blackburn.
The 25-year-old defender has suffered a slight tear in his ankle ligaments and is set to miss several weeks of action, further stretching Gary O’Neil’s options at the back.
There was at least a shaft of light for Wolves in an otherwise grim injury update.
Director of performance Phil Hayward reported encouraging progress for winger Rafiki Said, who endured a nightmare start to life at Molineux when he sustained a “high-grade” MCL injury during a pre-season friendly against Maidenhead United last month, just 11 days after signing.
“Rafiki's been working very hard in the gym for the last few weeks with his brace on. He's now out of the brace and the most recent scan looks great, so he's heading, certainly, in the right direction,” Hayward said.
The medical bulletin carried more cautious optimism. Hayward confirmed that goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is around a week away from full fitness, while Haiti international midfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde is expected to be another couple of weeks from returning to first-team training.
Wolves now move into the next phase of the campaign juggling injuries across the pitch, knowing their response over the coming weeks will shape the tone of their season.
