Barcelona Confirms Bid for Julián Álvarez Amid Tension with Atlético
Barcelona have finally dropped the pretence. Vice-president Rafael Yuste has confirmed the club tabled an offer for Julián Álvarez – and then immediately wrapped the whole subject in layers of caution and respect.
Speaking to TV3 after the Joan Gamper Trophy, Yuste was pressed on Barça’s pursuit of the Atlético Madrid forward, whose name has been circling around the Camp Nou offices all summer. He did not dodge the key point.
“We made an offer and that’s that,” he said, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.
No numbers. No details. Just the admission that Barcelona did, at some point, move for the Argentine.
Respect, tension and a silent battle with Atlético
The backdrop is delicate. Álvarez has been heavily linked with a switch to Barcelona, while Atlético’s stance has been blunt: he is not for sale.
Reports suggest the player wants to leave. Barcelona are clearly watching the situation, weighing up options as they search for more firepower in attack. Yet Yuste chose his words carefully, aware of how quickly a transfer tug-of-war between two La Liga rivals can escalate.
“I don’t like to talk about players who aren’t ours,” he said.
He then underlined the long-standing relationship with Atlético CEO Miguel Ángel Gil and president Enrique Cerezo, framing the whole saga as part of football’s usual backroom manoeuvring rather than an open conflict.
“We’ve had a very good relationship with Miguel Ángel Gil and President Cerezo for years and years, and so these are things that I would say are part and parcel of football. We must maintain decorum and let common sense prevail.”
The message was clear: Barcelona want Álvarez, but they will not publicly push Atlético into a corner. Not yet.
What Yuste did not reveal is whether the offer remains on the table or if Barcelona plan to return with a new proposal. The door is neither fully open nor firmly shut. It just sits there, slightly ajar.
Focus on La Liga… officially
After acknowledging the bid, Yuste quickly tried to steer the conversation away from the market and back onto the pitch.
“We must focus entirely on what Hansi said recently: that we have a match on Sunday and we have to go out and win it. There are 38 matches in La Liga and each one is worth three points, so we’re fully focused on trying to secure our first win.”
That line is the classic club stance in August: the season starts now, the dressing room comes first. Yet the timing of his confirmation on Álvarez ensures the transfer story will not disappear, no matter how much Barcelona talk about three points and opening-day momentum.
Window still open, Barça still active
Yuste also made it clear that Barcelona are not done in the market. The signing of Rodri has given Hansi Flick another option, and the vice-president used the opportunity to praise the people working behind the scenes.
“We have a great technical team, with Deco, Bojan and Alejandro Echeverría, who is also doing an exceptional job, and the transfer window is still open.”
That last line hangs over everything. The window is still open. Álvarez is still an Atlético player. Barcelona have already made one offer.
The question now is simple: will they dare to test Atlético’s resolve again before the clock runs out?
