Kees Smit Explains Why He Turned Down Real Madrid to Stay at AZ Alkmaar
Kees Smit, the promising midfielder from AZ Alkmaar, has opened up about why he declined a major summer transfer to join Real Madrid. Despite strong interest from the Spanish giants, the 20-year-old chose to stay in the Eredivisie after important discussions with his current club.
Real Madrid’s Midfield Pursuit
During the recent transfer window, Real Madrid searched for midfield reinforcements. They signed former Manchester City star Bernardo Silva and young talent Sergio Martinez but kept looking for more options. Their top target was World Cup-winning captain Rodri, who eventually signed for rival Barcelona. This forced Los Blancos to consider other candidates capable of making an immediate impact.
Kees Smit was a key name on their shortlist. Although several top European clubs showed interest, the Dutch youngster surprised many by choosing to stay at AZ.
Coach’s Role in Changing His Mind
Speaking through AZ's official media, Smit revealed he initially expected to leave during the summer window. The turning point came when head coach Lee-Roy Echteld expressed how much he wanted Smit to remain.
“To be honest, at first I thought I was going to leave, but then the coach really wanted me to stay,” Smit said. “I feel good here, surrounded by friends and family. That’s why I stayed.”
The club also firmly closed the door on a potential exit near the window’s end.
“Ten days ago I had a conversation, and AZ didn’t want to let me go anymore,” Smit added. “I took it positively because I feel like I’m not done here yet.”
Ignoring Transfer Rumors
Joining a club as big as Real Madrid brings heavy media attention, which Smit had to handle amid constant speculation about his future. He gradually distanced himself from the rumors.
“At first I read a lot, but then I started doing it less,” he said. “Some things are not true either. I can cope with it quite well. In short, I’m here and I’m happy to be here.”
Focus on Growth in the Netherlands
With the transfer window closed, Kees Smit is focused on developing his game at AZ’s AFAS Stadion. Staying in a familiar setting ensures he gets vital first-team minutes to grow under Lee-Roy Echteld’s guidance.
He already showed great promise this season, playing a major role as AZ won the Johan Cruyff Shield by beating PSV Eindhoven 4-0. Coming off their KNVB Cup victory last term, Smit’s performances hint at his readiness to take the next step in his career.
If he continues this form in the Eredivisie, top clubs like Real Madrid will likely come calling again. For now, the young midfielder’s priority is helping AZ succeed domestically.
