Juventus Pursues Zirkzee as Manchester United Exit Looms

Joshua Zirkzee’s Manchester United chapter already feels like it’s drifting towards an early epilogue.

The Dutch forward, once paraded as a key piece of United’s attacking rebuild, has become one of the most talked‑about names of this transfer window. According to The Athletic, multiple clubs have explored a deal, with United open to a sale and the player himself now actively assessing his options after a punishing introduction to English football.

Two unnamed Premier League rivals have sounded out his situation, testing the water on a move for a striker who arrived with pedigree but never quite found his rhythm in red. Ajax also made an enquiry, keen to understand United’s stance. On paper, it looked a natural fit: a Dutch attacker rebuilding his career in Amsterdam, in a league that has long been a springboard for technical forwards.

Then reality intervened. Ajax have since strengthened with Marcos Leonardo and Tolu Arokodare, and, with those deals done, the Dutch side are not expected to push for Zirkzee. One potential escape route quietly closes.

Italy, though, has opened its arms again.

Juventus are driving hardest for his signature, working on a loan agreement that would take Zirkzee back to Serie A. The 23‑year‑old has given the move his approval, keen on a return to a league that once showcased the full range of his talent. For Juve, it’s a chance to add a creative, technically polished forward without committing to a huge outlay. For Zirkzee, it’s a shot at recovery rather than reinvention.

The contrast with his arrival at Old Trafford is stark. United paid £36.5 million to bring him in from Bologna in 2024, buoyed by a superb 2023‑24 Serie A campaign that painted him as one of Europe’s most intriguing young forwards. He came with a reputation for silky link‑up play, clever movement, and an ability to operate between the lines rather than simply as a penalty‑box finisher.

England has been unforgiving.

Across the past two Premier League seasons, Zirkzee has managed just 19 starts in 56 league appearances, often reduced to cameos that did little for his confidence or rhythm. The return is blunt: five Premier League goals. For a striker signed at that fee, in that spotlight, it is a number that has followed him around every time he steps onto the pitch.

Yet the talent has never vanished, only flickered.

In pre‑season, he offered a reminder of what persuaded United to bet on him in the first place, scoring an excellent goal in a strong display against Rosenborg. It was the kind of finish that hinted at a different story, one in which patience is rewarded and a system is built around his strengths rather than his shortcomings.

That may no longer happen in Manchester.
