Juventus Pursues Jhon Lucumí Amid Transfer Challenges

As the August heat tightens its grip on Italy, Juventus find themselves in a familiar position: watching the clock, weighing the books and trying to land the defender they’ve quietly made a priority all summer.

At the centre of it all is Jhon Lucumí.

The Bologna centre-back has been on Juve’s radar for months, a constant presence in every discussion about how to upgrade a defence that ended last season with a sixth-place finish and too many regrets. Now, one key piece of the puzzle is in place.

According to Friday’s report from Tuttosport, Juventus and Lucumí have reached an agreement on personal terms. The Colombian has said yes to a five-year contract worth €2.5 million per season, plus a further €1 million in potential bonuses. For a player on Bologna wages, that’s a significant step up and a clear sign of how much he values the move.

It also underlines something else: he wants Turin, and only Turin.

Multiple outlets have reported that Lucumí is effectively holding out for Juventus, turning down richer offers to keep the Allianz Stadium in his sights. That stance has already had consequences across Europe. Galatasaray came calling. Besiktas, now coached by his former Bologna manager Vincenzo Italiano, pushed as well. Both have been told, in essence, to move on.

The same goes for earlier interest from Inter and several Premier League clubs. Those trails have gone cold in recent weeks, not because Lucumí lacks suitors, but because his mind is fixed on one destination.

There is, however, a problem. Juventus want him, but they can’t simply walk in and sign him tomorrow.

Bologna are holding firm, seeking as much as €25 million for the 26-year-old after his €28 million buyout clause expired in mid-July. With that clause gone, the negotiation has shifted onto Bologna’s terms, and they know exactly how valuable a starting-calibre, Serie A-proven centre-back is in the current market.

On the other side of the table, Juventus are juggling their own constraints. The club are widely understood to need a defensive sale before they can commit to another major signing at the back. Names such as Federico Gatti, Lloyd Kelly and Juan Cabal inevitably swirl around any discussion of potential exits, even if nothing is imminent. Until someone moves out, Lucumí is stuck in limbo.

So the situation is stark. The player has agreed his contract. The club have identified him as a priority. Bologna have named their price. And yet the deal sits there, suspended, waiting for Juventus to create the financial space to act.

Lucumí waits with it.

He has made his choice clear. Juventus have made their admiration clear. The market, as ever, is less forgiving. With the summer window ticking towards its final weeks, the question is no longer whether the defender wants the move, but whether the Bianconeri are prepared to make the decisive sacrifice to bring him to Turin.
