Juventus vs Chelsea: Pre-Season Clash with Yildiz and Palestra
Kenan Yildiz is back in a Juventus squad, and that alone gives this pre-season date in Hong Kong a sharper edge.
The 19-year-old, fresh from a World Cup run with Türkiye and weeks of concern over his knee and conditioning, has yet to play a minute of Juventus’ summer. That changes at the Kai Tak Stadium. Luciano Spalletti has him on the bench against Chelsea, ready to drip-feed him into the second half and finally start building his season.
For a friendly, this one carries plenty of storylines.
Yildiz waits, Milik starts
Spalletti has resisted the temptation to rush his returning starlet. Yildiz, who featured for Türkiye in the World Cup Group D clash against USA in Los Angeles on June 25, now takes his place among the substitutes in Hong Kong, a controlled reintroduction after weeks of caution around his knee.
On the pitch from the first whistle, it is a different kind of forward who gets his chance.
Arkadiusz Milik, so often the man in the shadows of bigger names, leads the line for Juventus. The veteran centre-forward rarely gets a clean stage at this level anymore; here, he has it. Jeremie Boga and Fabio Miretti will buzz around him, tasked with giving him service and energy in a 3-4-2-1 that looks built to test Chelsea’s back line rather than simply go through the motions of a tour match.
Behind them, the midfield has a steel-and-silk look. Douglas Luiz starts, a statement selection in a pre-season that has been about integrating key pieces quickly. Notably absent from the starting XI are Juventus’ two headline new signings, Randal Kolo Muani and Kerim Alajbegovic. Both sit this one out from the first whistle, their competitive debut minutes for the club still on hold.
Palestra’s Chelsea chance
On the other side, this is not a low-key run-out for Chelsea either. Marco Palestra, Italy international and €60m summer signing from Atalanta, walks straight into the starting line-up. It is a swift show of faith in a defender brought in to reshape the Blues’ back line and mentality.
Chelsea line up in a 4-2-3-1: Sanchez in goal; Palestra, Tosin, Fofana and Hato across the defence. In front of them, Nicoll-Jazuli and Moises Caicedo form the double pivot, a pairing that promises bite and control.
Ahead of that base, the attacking band looks bold. Geovany Quenda, Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens support Danny Welbeck, who goes straight into Xabi Alonso’s attack after his arrival. No easing-in period, no quiet introduction. Welbeck starts, leading a front line designed to stretch Juventus’ three-man defence and test their pre-season legs.
Chelsea do have absentees. Levi Colwill and Cole Palmer miss out as a precaution, decisions that underline the club’s reluctance to take risks on key players in August. But there is good news on the bench: Mykhailo Mudryk, only recently back with the squad, is named among the substitutes.
