Justin Gaethje Stands by Ilia Topuria After UFC Freedom 250 Stoppage

UFC lightweight champion Justin Gaethje spoke out in defense of Ilia Topuria, insisting his opponent didn’t quit when the fight was stopped at UFC Freedom 250. The bout ended in June with Gaethje winning by a fourth-round TKO after Topuria’s corner threw in the towel, halting the fight due to the damage their fighter had taken.

Many fans and fighters have suggested that Topuria gave up on the stool, but Gaethje disagrees with that notion completely.

Gaethje Clarifies the Stoppage Decision

On the One Night with Steiny podcast, Gaethje explained that it was not Topuria’s choice to end the fight. Instead, it was the decision of Topuria's corner, who were protecting their fighter from further harm.

"He didn’t quit on the stool, his body was too compromised to continue fighting. He didn’t make the call, his coaches made the call because they’re there to protect him. My coaches are in my corner to protect me in those times," Gaethje said.

Potential Rematch or Other Contenders?

The possibility of a rematch between Gaethje and Topuria is up in the air. Although Arman Tsarukyan arguably deserves a title shot more, having won six consecutive fights while Topuria recently lost to Gaethje, UFC tends to prioritize matchups that draw the biggest attention.

If the promotion views a Gaethje-Topuria rematch as the most marketable fight in the lightweight division, it could happen before Tsarukyan gets his chance. Yet, Gaethje himself hasn’t decided if he will return for another fight or retire, especially after absorbing significant damage despite his victory.

The UFC is allowing Gaethje time to weigh his options, leaving fans waiting to see what the champion’s next move will be.
