The structure suits all parties on paper: Juve get a low-risk look at a player they know from Serie A, United get a clean valuation for a forward who has never truly convinced at Old Trafford.
A talent that never quite landed
Zirkzee arrived in Manchester in 2024 under Erik ten Hag, carrying the familiar labels: “potential”, “upside”, “one for the future”. He has never escaped them.
Across 56 Premier League appearances, he has scored just five goals. For a No.9 at Manchester United, those numbers are unforgiving. He has failed to nail down a starting place under Ruben Amorim or Michael Carrick, drifting on the fringes while others have seized their chances.
The 25-year-old did offer a reminder of his quality in United’s 5-0 pre-season win over Rosenborg last Friday, impressing with his movement and link-up play. But pre-season flashes have not translated into Premier League consistency, and the reality of his situation is stark.
Benjamin Sesko and Mateus Cunha now sit ahead of him in the pecking order. If Marcus Rashford returns fully to the fold, Zirkzee risks sliding even further down the list of options. For a forward entering what should be his prime years, bench cameos and late substitutions are a thin diet.
United’s stance softens
United are understood to be open to letting him leave this summer. Two years ago they paid around £36.5m to bring him in; accepting a £30m option now is an admission that the move has not worked as planned, but also a pragmatic call in a market that rarely rewards underperformance.
Club officials reportedly view that figure as a fair reflection of his current value. The goals have not come, the role has never been clearly his, and the squad is being reshaped under Carrick. A loan with a purchase option gives United a way out without writing off the player entirely.
This marks a shift from January, when Zirkzee wanted to go but was told a departure was off the table. Back then, United felt they needed him. Now, with attacking reinforcements in place and hierarchy established, the calculation has changed.
Juventus move to the front
The door has opened, and Juventus have stepped through it.
The Turin club had been pushing to sign France international Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain after his disappointing loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur. Negotiations stalled over the fee, and Juve quickly switched targets. Zirkzee, with his Serie A background and more attainable price point, has moved to the top of their list.
Juve are described as the most serious contenders, but not the only ones. Roma have tracked Zirkzee for a long time and retain an interest. Even so, Juventus are believed to be ahead in the race after accelerating talks and putting a clear proposal on the table.
The player’s camp has responded positively to Juventus’ approach. That matters. Zirkzee knows the league, knows the rhythm, and crucially, believes it suits him.
A return to familiar ground
Serie A is not a leap into the unknown for him; it is a return to a stage where he has previously looked at ease.
He spent a season on loan at Parma and then two seasons at Bologna, learning the tactical demands of Italian football and thriving in systems that value his blend of touch, awareness, and combination play. For a striker who likes to drift, link, and think, the slower tempo and structured build-up of Serie A can feel like a better fit than the relentless, transitional chaos of the Premier League.
That belief is said to underpin his openness to a move back to Italy. He still sees a path at United – he reportedly thinks European football at Old Trafford in 2026/27 could bring more chances under Carrick – but that vision clashes with the immediate reality of his status in the squad.
Right now, he is a third-choice striker with no guarantees.
A career at a crossroads
Zirkzee’s story at Manchester United has been one of almosts. Almost breaking through. Almost stringing a run of form together. Almost convincing a fanbase that has seen too many false dawns up front.
The numbers don’t flatter him, and the competition around him is only getting fiercer. Juventus are offering a reset, a league he understands, and a system that might finally allow his game to breathe.
United, for their part, appear ready to let him find that elsewhere.
