Joao Cancelo's Permanent Return to Barcelona
Joao Cancelo is back at Barcelona. This time, for good.
Barcelona have confirmed the permanent signing of the Portuguese full-back, ending a long and winding negotiation process and tying him to the club on a three-year deal that runs until 2029.
The announcement dropped through a burst of posts on the club’s official X account, finally closing a saga that had stretched across the summer. Earlier reports had indicated Cancelo would arrive as a free agent, after reaching an agreement with Al-Hilal to terminate his contract in exchange for waiving the remainder of his salary.
Third spell, first commitment
This is Cancelo’s third stint in Blaugrana colours, but the first with full commitment attached. He first arrived on loan from Manchester City for the 2023–24 season, then returned on a temporary deal from Al-Hilal in the second half of last season.
Across that season and a half in Catalonia, he became a fixture. Sixty-five appearances in all competitions, six goals, nine assists. A La Liga title secured along the way. His attacking surges from full-back and ability to step into midfield made him a key part of Barcelona’s structure, and the club have now moved to ensure that influence is no longer short-term.
Quiet exit from Saudi Arabia
Cancelo’s departure from Al-Hilal closes a chapter that never really caught fire. He joined the Saudi club in the summer of 2024 and spent two seasons on their books, but played only one of them after being cut from the domestic squad last term.
When he did feature, the numbers still told a story of impact: 45 matches in all competitions, three goals, 14 assists. No trophies, though, and no lasting imprint to match his European peak.
Barcelona, by contrast, know exactly what they are getting.
Building a new-look Barcelona
The Portuguese defender becomes Barcelona’s fifth signing of this transfer window. He follows Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Rodri and Jesse Bisiou through the door, with the club also activating a purchase clause for promising Egyptian forward Hamza Abdelkarim.
It is a clear pattern: pace, directness, versatility, age profiles that can shape the next cycle. Cancelo, at 32, adds something different — experience, proven quality at the top level and a deep familiarity with the club’s demands.
He has already worn the shirt, already felt the pressure. Now he returns not as a loanee passing through, but as a cornerstone of a project that expects to win — and win quickly.
