Joao Cancelo Rejoins Barcelona on Permanent Deal
Joao Cancelo is back at Barcelona – this time to stay.
The Portugal full-back has rejoined the club on a permanent deal after mutually terminating his contract with Al-Hilal, ending a brief and turbulent chapter in Saudi Arabia and reopening one he always wanted to continue in Catalonia.
The 32-year-old had left Manchester City for Al-Hilal on a three-year contract in 2024, but finished last season on loan at Barca, playing his part as they reclaimed the La Liga title. Once his exit from the Saudi Pro League side was agreed, Cancelo became a free agent and moved quickly to secure what he called his dream return.
He has signed a three-year contract at Camp Nou.
"It's my dream," Cancelo said. "I'm where I want to be and I am very happy. I like the club, I identify with it. I feel loved here and I promise to give everything for this club."
For Cancelo, this is more than another move on an already crowded CV. He first arrived in Spain a decade ago, joining Valencia from Benfica in 2014, initially on loan. That spell launched him into a tour of Europe’s elite: Inter Milan on loan in 2017-18, then permanent transfers to Juventus in 2018 and Manchester City in 2019. He also closed out the 2022-23 season with a loan stint at Bayern Munich.
Barcelona already know exactly what they are getting. Cancelo spent the 2023-24 campaign on loan from City, his second spell with the Spanish giants and a reminder of how dangerous he can be when given license to roam from full-back. This new agreement finally makes him a permanent Barca player at the third attempt.
The Catalan club have also moved decisively in midfield. Earlier this week they completed the signing of Cancelo’s former Manchester City team-mate Rodri, agreeing a fee of about £65m for the Spain international.
Two proven winners, one title already in the bag, and now long-term deals on the table. Barcelona are not just tinkering with the squad. They are rebuilding a core they believe can dominate again.
