João Cancelo Returns to Barcelona on Permanent Deal
João Cancelo is back in Barcelona. This time, he’s not just passing through.
The Portuguese full-back has completed a free transfer from Al-Hilal, signing a permanent deal that ties him to FC Barcelona until June 30, 2029. After two productive loan spells, the on-off relationship has finally become a long-term commitment.
The club’s announcement was brief but decisive: an agreement with Cancelo, arriving as a free agent, contract until 2029. No fee, no frills. Just a player who pushed hard to return.
Cancelo has already lifted the curtain on how far he was willing to go to make the move happen. Speaking about the deal, he admitted he sacrificed part of his salary to terminate his contract with the Saudi Pro League side.
“I’m very happy, I’m very pleased to be here, I’m where I want to be. I trained separately for a week. I told Deco that either I came here or I’d spend a year there without playing, still getting paid,” he said.
“I gave up part of my salary, but it was either sign for Barça or nothing. It’s a very special club, I’m here to help and I hope to win many titles. We’re building a great team.”
Those are not the words of a player using Barcelona as a stepping stone. They are the words of someone who has nailed his colours to the Camp Nou mast.
On the pitch, Hansi Flick is expected to lean on Cancelo from the start. The 32-year-old is set to open the season as first choice on the left side of defence, with Alejandro Balde pushing him for minutes and offering a different profile and pace.
Two loans, now a permanent deal. Cancelo has the shirt he wanted and the contract to match. The next five years will show whether this reunion finally delivers the titles he came back to chase.
