J.J. Watt Unveils Burnley FC’s Cream Away Kit for 2026–27

The cream always rises to the top. At Burnley, it now delivers the post.

J.J. Watt, three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year and now minority investor in Burnley FC, has stepped out of the boardroom and into character as the club’s resident “Milk Man” to unveil the club’s new cream-colored away kit for the 2026–27 season.

Watt’s Milk Float Tour of Burnley

Burnley, founded in 1882 and fiercely proud of its roots, chose a distinctly local, tongue‑in‑cheek route to reveal the strip. In a promotional film titled “The Cream Rises,” released on Friday, July 31, Watt trades shoulder pads for a milkman’s overalls.

He starts his day in the countryside, framed by cows and sheep, before climbing into a traditional milk float and heading through the town. Each stop is a nod to Burnley’s sense of community and identity. Local legends receive the “deliveries” — not bottles of cream, but the new kit itself.

Cricket great Sir Jimmy Anderson opens his door to Watt. So does entrepreneur Dave Fishwick. The message is clear: this isn’t just a shirt drop, it’s Burnley’s story being passed from one local figure to another.

The journey ends where it always had to: Turf Moor. Watt steps out at Burnley’s home ground and reveals the full Castore away strip — a cream base, cut clean by horizontal red and green stripes that instantly stand out against the traditional claret and blue backdrop.

A “Quintessentially Burnley” Vision

Watt has not treated this as a celebrity vanity project. He has treated it like a responsibility.

“From day one, I didn't want this to be just another football shirt. I wanted to create something quintessentially Burnley,” he said in a statement on the club’s website. “Every decision we made started with one question: are we doing the supporters of this club proud?

“As I’ve said many times before, this club existed long before I arrived and it will exist long after I’m gone. But during this time, my goal is to help honor its great past while also shepherding it to a brighter future.”

Watt, married to former United States soccer international Kealia Ohai, spent two years working with the club on the design. He dug through Burnley’s visual history, studying old kits and crests, and pushed to revive one of the most intricate badges in the club’s archive.

The chosen crest is an ornate shield, heavy with symbolism: symmetrical lions, roses, a bee, and a knight’s helmet. It’s a design that carries memories for generations of supporters, having fronted Burnley shirts from 1979 to 1983 and again from 1987 to 2009.

Across the cream fabric runs a subtle geometric pattern, not just for aesthetics but as a quiet tribute to the stonework at Gawthorpe Hall, the club’s historic training base. It’s a nod to place, not just brand.

“I am merely a steward for this club,” Watt said in the club’s behind‑the‑scenes video documenting the making of the kit. “But the opportunity to create a kit with this badge and this crest and hopefully with the proper respect for what it means is an incredible honor for me and I hope everybody likes it.”

“Future-Retro” and Fan Firsts

Inside Burnley’s offices, the project has clearly left its mark.

“It’s been great fun working with JJ on this project,” said Ed Stewart‑Lockhart, the club’s Chief Marketing Officer, who described the jersey as “future‑retro.” “He's brought incredible energy all the way through. You can see how much he's enjoyed it, but also how much it matters to him that we've got it right.”

The club has backed the launch with a collector’s touch. The first 100 fans to buy the shirt in person at the official store will receive a special presentation box, complete with an exclusive cap and a signed photo of Watt. The first 100 online customers will also receive an autographed photo, turning early purchases into instant memorabilia.

A New Look for a New Fight

On the pitch, Burnley are preparing for a different kind of grind. Relegated after just one season back in the Premier League, they will line up in the EFL Championship this coming campaign, chasing an immediate return to the top flight.

The cream away kit will get its first outing on Sunday, August 2, in a home friendly against Torino at Turf Moor. A fresh strip, an old crest, and a club with something to prove.

If the cream really does rise, Burnley will be hoping this season is about more than just the shirt.
