Jeff Bezos Joins Liverpool Minority Stake Bid by Amit Bhatia

Jeff Bezos has entered the Liverpool ownership conversation, with the Amazon founder holding talks over joining a consortium aiming to buy a minority stake in the club, according to reports.

Sky News reports that Bezos, one of the richest men on the planet, is in discussions about becoming part of a syndicate fronted by Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal.

On Tuesday, Fenway Sports Group confirmed that Bhatia’s group had formally approached them to explore an investment in Liverpool.

“An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club,” an FSG spokesperson said.

The potential involvement of Bezos adds a striking new layer to the story. Forbes estimates his fortune at around £192bn, and he has already circled major sports franchises before. He previously explored bids for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders, ultimately walking away from both opportunities.

Bhatia’s move comes at a significant moment in his own football journey. The 46-year-old stepped down from the board at QPR this week, ending an 18-year association with the Championship side. His stake was transferred to majority owner Ruben Gnanalingam, clearing the decks for a new chapter.

For Liverpool, any agreement with Bhatia’s consortium would not represent a change of control but a continuation of a strategy already in motion. In 2023, FSG sold a minority stake to investment firm Dynasty, and any fresh deal is expected to follow a similar template: fresh capital, same owners.

FSG’s stewardship stretches back to 2010, when the group bought Liverpool for £300m. The transformation since then has been stark, on and off the pitch. Forbes now values the club at £4.6bn, placing it among the most valuable football institutions in the world.

Now the prospect looms of Liverpool sitting at the crossroads of American sports ownership, global private capital and one of the most recognisable names in modern business. Whether Bezos ultimately joins Bhatia’s bid or not, the scale of interest circling Anfield underlines a simple truth: Liverpool have become a financial powerhouse as well as a footballing one, and the queue to buy in is only getting longer.
